Title: PIn and top weight
Post by: Lifesaver on December 01, 2006, 11:56:46 PM
Any opinions on the differences in reaction you might get with a ball with a higher top weight, lets say 3oz or higher, compaired to 1-2oz top weight. I realize most buyers like a longer pin, say 2-3 in, but is there any reason a ball with a 1 in pin and smaller top weight would not perform as well?

GENERALLY speaking, higher top weights will give the ball more of a "push" down the lane due to being "cover-heavy" while lower TWs will be more "core-heavy" and revs up a bit earlier; longer pins (pin out, more than 2") will give you a more pronounced change of direction on the backends, whereas shorter pins (pin in, 2" or less) will give you a smoother, more controlled and "arcy" transition on the backends.

In a longer pin, there is usually more change of direction because of pin height, not because of top weights.

Generally, shorter pins cannot be put above the fingers because of the 1oz rule, so they are put below and you see earlier reactions.

To answer the original question, the only time top weight should be a factor is when determining whether you want a sizeable x-hole after drilling. Higher tops allow for larger holes to be used in the end.
