Pin-Axis: More Beneficial to Low Trackers?
« on: January 22, 2006, 07:22:01 AM »
More often than not, in larger volumes of oil, I have trouble getting balls to get into a strong roll. Partly in fact that I track pretty low (pap about 4" straight over). Pin axis or near enough for that matter, I've been reading makes the ball rev up early and as a low flare drilling, controls the backend. With me being a low tracker, backend comes natural. Not a ton, mind you but usually on medium and less, I have no problem opening up the entire lane. But come medium heavy or longer patterns, I suffer. So would a pin axis or partial pin axis (1-2" pin-pap) drilling help me out at all? Or should I stick with your average 3 3/8 to 4 1/2" to pap? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

kingpin, I asked the same thing here a while back. I have the same problem in oil & have had all different drillings suggested for that, but none really for pin axis, I guess because of lack of backend movement. I had pin axis drilling on a solid reactive & it did go into a good heavy roll & raised the track considerably. I have not tried it, but one would think a dull oil ball drilled that way should work, you just may not get a big backend movement. Like you, I don't care about the big backend so much, just looking for a good roll instead of slidding through the oil.

I too have this problem. I am a NO-Thumb low tracker with a PAP of 4" over. I have tried lots of different balls and layouts for heavy oil, but I just have too much side roll to make much difference in reaction. You'll be better off just using your favorite medium oil layout and taking the speed down and trying to come more up the back of the ball. Over the last 6 months I have been trying to experiment with more releases. Its harder for me since I am a no thumber, but I have noticed alot of change in ball reactions.

For low trackers, place the pin closer to your track for more hook on oil. Going past your track, i.e. 7-10" from your PAP, is even better, if you can stay away from flaring on your fingers.

Negative weights and/or negative core positions will hook more on oil, especially for low trackers/spinners. =:^D

So pin by axis would be considered in the positive region and therefore retaining tilt? I thought that the farther the pin was away from your PAP, the more length it created?

Getting confused here. Pin axis is a low almost no flare layout but as you move the pin further away you increase flare. At 3 3/8, you create maximum flare and pin placements past that reduce flare, dont they? That's what I've always read.

I drilled a passion with pin 4 inches from axis and it is only 1 inch above midline and the RAD+ is on my val. ball starts up early and it moves continuously in the backend. it out hooks my vertigo and trifecta easily by 5 boards each.
