What's the correct adjustment?
« on: January 20, 2016, 10:14:29 AM »
I've made some fairly substantial adjustments over the last 4-5 months to correct for continued knuckle issues and loss of flexibility. I like where I'm at, but have one remaining issue...

I'm using oval thumb inserts now (for me at least, they feel great), but although I release the ball better than I have in years,  I feel pressure at the back of the base of my thumb where it joins the hand. I can see how all possible adjustments (4 I can think of) may have an effect, but which is the best bet to remove pressure at the base of the thumb?
Thanks in advance

Pressure at the base of the thumb (on the thumbnail side) can be caused by many different factors. Ovals in particular, can be a contributing source of discomfort on this part of the thumb. This is due to the fact that an oval shaped hole makes more positive contact with the thumb than do round holes. If this is the source of your problem, a simple solution would be to take a small file and  some fine grit sandpaper and round off the side of the hole right at the bevel on the side that is creating the discomfort.   Do not overdo it.

Also, care should be taken NOT to round off the grip side of the oval--just do the opposite side.
This simple "fix" is often all that is needed to reduce that pressure point. Otherwise, I would look at other potential contributing factors. These could include gripping the ball
with too much "scissor" pressure with the thumb, which is usually the result of
excessive bevel on the grip side (of the thumb). It could also be due to excessive
left lateral thumb pitch (for a right hander).

I would advise trying the first suggestion as a starting point.

Good luck!

I'll give that a shot, thanks! I was worried about decreasing the "fit" overall in the thumb, but as you said, just don't overdo it. If it's indicated as a good starting solution, I'll take it a bit at a time and see what happens.
Thanks again.

I would like to add if you can make this adjustment while bowling. This way you can feel your fit as you adjust it.
