Pin left of middle grip (RH)
« on: October 08, 2007, 09:10:01 AM »
I have a Jinx that has the pin above the middle finger, and cg below my ring finger.

This has to be my favorit drill but want to see if anyone has tried this and what are your reactions.  Has anyone ever tried it further left of middle finger?

It all depends on your Pap. For me that would almost be 6" pin-pap, and that would give me a tame ball reaction, good on shorter oil patterns.

When you roll the ball, is the oil ring far away from your thumb and fingers(low track)? That could be why it works for you. It could be like a 4x4 for your PAP.

Centers, I have a pearl particle with no marked mass bias. The pin is above my middle finger which gives me about 5 3/4" pin to pap with the CG just rt of centerline & 1 1/2" above the thumbhole. On a THS the ball goes fairly long with a strong backend move. I also have one with the pin just below & to the left of middle finger which is 6 1/4 pin to pap, CG in about same area, & I get a great early read with a strong continous roll to the pocket. These are 2 of my favorite layouts now. I am a fairly low tracker, but not a spinner & my pap is 4 3/4 over & 1/4 up.

I have a Neptune (photo in profile) with a 6" pin to PAP.. its located below and just left of my middle finger.  When the lanes get dry enough, its a great ball.

I got my dad's Action Attack drilled up this way -- it's a 6 inch pin to PAP for him.  Even with minimal side rotation, it gets him length and great pin action on drier patterns.

My PAP has changed over the years, but it was 4 x 1 and I had a LT-48 Gold with a 6" pin.  The pin was actually left of my middle finger hole by about an inch.  I drilled that ball up for bowling the high-roller when I needed to play "over the cap" on the left side of the lane.  I got tremendous length and tons of backend.  Of course it was too wicked to use on oil, but great when I needed extra angle on a broken down pattern.

I wouldn't recommend placing the pin any further than 6 1/2" from the PAP.  So, for someone who tracks extremly close to the fingers and thumb who may have a PAP of 6" x 1/4", that pin may be too far from their PAP and COULD cause the ball to flare backwards.

So, where the pin is in relation to your grips/fingerholes tells really only part of the story.  If the holes were drilled into the top of the weight block (pin down) or side of it (pin up).  If you drill the pin down, and into the top of the block, you are essentially making the weight block (core) shorter and lowering the RG, which will cause the ball to rev quicker.  If you drill into the side, you will make the core essentially taller, raising the RG and getting more lope, or skid.
