I noticed a few pros had balls drilled with the pin over the middle finger (watching some PBA on ESPN Classic).    For right handers I typically see recommendations for pin over (or under) ring, or over/under bridge, but never over the middle finger.  What is the benefit of this?  What type of reaction does this give?  Does it matter if the core is symmetric or asymmetrical?

it doesn't make a difference if we don't know where the bowler's pap is...

More than likely the guys that are using that pin position are realy high rev and/or have a PAP of 4.5" or less which would make it the same as an average bowler having it over the ring finger with a PAP in the 5 to 5.5 range.
I have a X-Factor that is pin over middle with MB strong and it is LONG and very angular in comparison to the one I have that is slighlty right of and above ring with same MB position.

PBA bowlers usually generate enough revs themselves that they do not require much help from the ball. Placing the pin over the middle finger greatly increases length and reduces flare on a ball.

I have had several balls drilled this way and they are best when used on shorter patterns. These balls still move in the backend. Pin over ring vs pin over middle finger is very different. Pin over middle usually goes down the lane about 3-4ft longer before its move.

PS-as mentioned above....the bowler's PAP comes into play here as well.

i have a pap that typically is in the 4 inch range. for me to place any ball 5 inches or farther away from my pap the pin must be in the negative side of the ball. Probably about half or atleast one thrid of my stuff is drilled negative, either cg or pin or both. I still get average flare in general. min 3 inches to 5 inches dependant.

I guess all that makes sense.  I was watching ESPN Classic and 1 of the shows from 2001 (don't remember if it was Long Island or Louisville) and noticed Norm Duke and a few others all had pin over middle.  I usually don't notice that stuff, but for some reason it just looked strange.
