Hello,

This is my first post and I was looking for some advice on drilling a new Motiv Cruel.  I am a slightly speed dominate player with a PAP of 5 1/8 X 1 3/8 up.  Axis tilt of 10 degrees, rev rate around 265 and speed of about 16 to 17 MPH.  I will be using this ball on a THS that is about 42 feet long and on the oily side.  It was suggested on the Motiv website that I go with a dual angle layout of 50 X 4 1/2 X 20 with a P3 hole if needed.  I am looking for the ball to give me a good mid-lane read with a strong arch on the backend that will kick out the 10 pin without burning itself out.  I have been using an Invasion drilled with a Double Thumb drilling with good success but lately I have been leaving A LOT of 10 pins.  Any comments on this or any other possible layout would be appreciated.

Well, unless you have a flood the likes of which I have never, ever seen on a house shot, it doesn't surprise me that you're leaving a lot of corner pins with your Invasion.  A super duper strong oiler with pretty much the strongest layout possible on a house shot is almost always a bad idea, even if you are a little speed dominant.  That ball is going to want to use up its energy in the wrong part of the lane.  Instead of saving some energy for the back part of the lane, it starts reading the lane early and bleeds off that energy and rotation you need to create angle in the backend and good pin action.

Since it's a house shot, I assume you've got a fair bit of friction to the outside part of the lane, even if the middle is oily.  If you have anything weaker, I strongly recommend trying to use it and take advantage of the friction.  I likewise don't rev it up much, and I can throw a strong ball in the middle part of the lane on a house shot, but really my best bet is something more like a a strong pearl with a very, very light coat of polish and lengthy drill, or a weak pearl with surface and a strong drill.

I do have a Hammer Jigsaw that is drilled weaker and it has a little bit of polish on it that I have used from time to time.  The only issue I have is that I play just about up the 7 board and if I get it out a little far with the Jigsaw it does not seem to want to come back and I start leaving washouts.  If I try to move to the right with it more then i am almost angling it into the pocket and that does not seem to work either.

That's still a very strong ball that's probably reading the lanes so early that it burns out if you get it into the dry.  Do you have anything weaker?  For example, I can actually hook a sanded Storm Tropical Heat just as much, if not more, than my Gravity Shift on a house shot simply because the Gravity Shift rolls too early and dies when it gets too far right into the friction, but the Tropical Heat's weaker cover and higher RG core let it retain energy longer and hook back from that dry spot.  On a sport shot where there's a higher volume of oil, the Tropical Heat won't hook anywhere near as much, but on a house shot where the dry outside is very prevalent, it does.
