need help with a pin axis drill for a high track player
« on: December 28, 2010, 02:14:29 PM »
Is it safe to put the pin close to the axis point for a high track player. If not what are some layouts that would give  a simlar reaction. Pap is 5 5/8 over on ml. tilt is about 45 degrees. Thanks for any help.

These days I am usually considered to be a tweener - working on becoming a stroker - used to be a cranker. My nothing is working ball is an Avalanche Solid drilled 1" X 3.5" with the weight hole in the PAP. This ball can be thrown with 2 to 10 boards of hook depending on release. My specs for PAP are 5 1/8" over, and 5/8" up. The solid cover gives decent pin action even though this rolls like a souped up plastic ball. I like this ball better than a plastic spare ball because it is more predictable - and it gives me a good dry lane ball. The track is close (3/4") to the thumb hole but not over it it is about twice that from the finger holes.

pin on axis shouldn't flare, so I don't see why not. It's a very niche drilling for a very particular reaction though, so I'd think carefully before doing it, you might be able to get a similar effect with something more versatile.

My personal suggestion would be to take the least used ball you own and try it out. My Avalanche Solid was overlapped in reaction and carry by balls I had above and below it so it became "surplus." It was either put it in the closet or try something really different - glad I did.

When I really cranked, I had a really high track and never had an issue with pin-axis. It was my preferred drilling for house shots.

Sir, could you describe the ball reaction?  I'm kind of thinking of playing around with the layout.
I'm 5 degrees tilt, 85 degrees rotation, 15mph and 250-280 rpms.  having some problems with wet dry.

Thanks a lot guy's. I'm trying to blend out a really wet dry house with this. I also have an old blue hammer sitting in the closet I have thought about getting out. Any thought's on that.

I've been rolling with a 85°x2.5"x45° drilling.  Not quite pin axis, but I found this layout to really smooth out the reaction, while still having some flare to the ball.  I am rev dominate/high tracker, so everything was pretty much skid flip just to help get the ball down the lane, and I had alot of over/under reaction because of it.  Since the change to the new layout, the reaction I am seeing is an easy roll through the front part of the lane, and a nice smooth continuous motion to the pocket.  Same roll every time if I do my part.

I used to own a urethane Blue Hammer - naturally it didn't absorb oil so unless the layout provided some decent flare would end up with 1" band of oil around ball when it came back in the ball return. That said, it would be a good ball for some of the dryer conditions we see now. Sorry I traded it but I do still use a Purple Rhino Pro for dry, which I find very similar to the Blue Hammer - and no, reactive or not it doesn't absorb much oil either.

This is a very safe way to get an earlier roll reaction. Very useful on wet/dry and spotty conditions. It is a tame drilling, however, tame as the ball allows. Just need to maintain legal sideweight, that depends on pin distance to cg and top weight before drilling. I shot some of my best scores @ usbc open with this. My numbers are 5 5/8 over ; 5/16 up.
