Extra Weight Hole
« on: May 18, 2006, 01:50:48 PM »
Hi,

A friend asked me to help him with a Track Phenom.  He has it drilled Label Leverage, with the CG right in the center of the palm. He said that he would like to have the ball start up earlier, and asked if we could add a weight hole to do that.  Assuming the ball has 0 oz of side weight and Finger weight (I will double check), where would you put a weight hole to start the ball up earlier?  My guess would be to go 3" down from his PAP along the Val line ... is that correct?  If that is the case how small a diameter hole would you use to avoid making the ball illegal?

If he (or she) wanted the ball to start up earlier he should not have drilled the ball with that particular layout. That layout is for moderate length with mediocre (at best) backend. An additional weight hole placed to this layout may decrease length by (at most) a couple of feet. Personally, I would either (firstly) sand the ball or (secondly) plug and redrill it with a stronger layout, with the odds being place on a plug and redrill to get the desired reaction.

If it's still in box finish, take it down to 1000-grit sanded.  If it doesn't roll out (remember, the Phenom is a very strong high-load particle ball), it should at least be earlier and smoother.

The advantage to surface changes is that you can always undo it.  A weighthole could be plugged, too, but now you've got a ball with a plug, and that's not necessarily as valuable.  Same with plug and redrill (which may be a more serious change to the ball, but will make a much bigger difference).
