Need a good grease pencil
« on: November 21, 2006, 10:01:57 PM »
Well I took a step towards drilling my own balls by getting a Pro-Sect. Sure is expensive for what you get. Also ordered a grease pencil with it. Came yesterday, so I rush to my work area with one of my undrilled balls, some layout diagrams, and a hot cup of coffee. There weren't any instructions with the grease pencil so I couldn't figure out how to get it to write on the surface of the ball. Really, what's the trick to getting the pencil to write when trying to scribe an arc? Straight lines weren't too bad but the grease pencil only left a mark you could see if you looked at it just right in the light. And yes I was turning the Pro-Sect away from the arc I was trying to make. Even broke the pencil in half to expose fresh core, still didn't work. Worked better on my scotchbrited Apogee but still not great. I going to an office supply place today and see what they have. If anybody has any suggestions I really need them.

Thanks
Dick

Never had that problem, maybe you got an old pencil ? I usually dip mine in alcohol before I use a new one, don't know why, just do. You might try that ?

Buddies was where I got the marking pencil. Probably made in China. Alot of stuff that's made in China doesn't seem to work as well as when it was made in the US. The alcohol trick helped. I found a black china marker at the house that write real well on the ball, it's just hard to see. At least I'm on the right track.

Try using a white pencil like the ones you used to keep score with before computer scoring.

I do like the white pencils best, and you can clean the mess up with water and soften the tip with water.  But it's really difficult to draw a good arc with a ProSect.  Go to WalMart and buy a compass like your kids use in school.  Set the span using the scale on your ProSect.  Be sure to stick the metal point in the ball far enough that it doesn't scoot and draw to your heart's content.  --  JohnP

Going to order some Berol white grease pencils off the net. Tried the compass with the yellow grease pencil, works pretty good. I remember alot of stuff from my high school geometry class so bisecting lines and such is a piece of cake. Redid the practice drill pattern I did with the prosect alone, with the prosect and the compass. The layout was more accurate. Going to bend the steel point of the compass a little so it's more perpendicular to the surface of the ball. Thanks for the heads up.

Remember, you're not dealing with a plane surface, but with the surface of a sphere.  You can use your ProSect for most functions (although I prefer an Armadillo for some).  To bisect a line, just measure it and halve the measuremnt.  Use the protractor scale for angled lines.  --  JohnP

I picked up a white grease/wax pencil from a local art/craft store for around $2-$3. However, sometimes you have to press harder if its a polished ball. I also tried a white eyeliner pencil from the makeup section of walgreens while my wife took all day looking for makeup. It writes really easy, but you have to keep the tip sharp so that it does'nt write so wide. It also has to sit for a while to dry good or else if you touch it it will smear.
