Question on dull drill bit?

How can you tell if a bit needs to be sharpened? Tried to drill a ball yesterday and the 1 1/4" started shaking the machine pretty bad and did not drill a true hole. Machine seems fine though I think. An old AMF 2500 I just use a few times a year in a non commercial environment. I was wondering if the bit is too dull. The other holes drilled ok.

did it struggle when you were drilling into the core material? Some cores are really tough. I casn tell when my bits get dull just from using them i guess.

Usually the bit will get very hot and could even burn you fingers.  Its hot because its no longer cutting the hole but basically burning a path.  Also, you will have to apply more pressure when drilling using a dull bit.

 

Depending on use, you should at least have them sharpened once per year.

 Yes, seemed like it went first 1/3 no problem then really stuggled and vibrated. The ball was a Fury Pearl if that has anything to do with it. I stopped drilling and used my Delta upright which seemed to have rough time also. I'll have the bits sharpened, Made mess out of the hole. Did not drill true.

Drilled a hole in on old C300 Rock I had laying around. Worked fine, no vibration (took quite a bit of pressure though). I noticed it was all coverstock being drilled out. Is the shaking possibly due to different hardness inside the core of the Fury. It had a heck of time, never seen it act like that before. Will get bit sharpened.
