??? on layout according to your pap
« on: October 25, 2004, 06:25:00 AM »
I have traded & bought quite a few used balls here on ballreviews. Sometimes, I just get the thumb slugged & drill it to my span & keep the existing layout on the ball. I had a lot of success on using all the used balls that I got, eventhough it wasn't my actual pap measurement.

For example: someone's used ball drilled 3 3/8 stacked leverage with his pap of 5' or 5 1/4' with 1/2 up & my pap is 4 7/8 1/2 up.

Does it make a big difference on the reaction if you don't layout your ball according to your pap? I know there's a lot of trading done on this forum. Do you guys do the same thing I do or you guys fully plug all the holes & drill it to your specs? It does get expensive with this routine all the time, complete plug & drill.

Any opinions will be much appreciated...

I have always plugged the thumb but only plug the fingers if they have pitches that are way off from mine. Which has only happened once they had reverse in both fingers.
As far as being drilled to their PAP instead of yours it really doesn't matter unless their PAP was something extreme.
You gave an example of 5 over 1/2 up or 5 1/4 over and 1/2 up versus your 4 7/8 over 1/2 up. Their would be virtually no difference in the reaction with such a small change, especially considering your PAP will fluctuate some.
My track varies about 3/4" so I average it to come up with my PAP. Which is any where from 4 1/4 - 5 over and 3/4 - 1 1/4 up depending on what I am trying to do. Average 4 5/8 over 1 up.

Triple most bowlers(not all are in that 5 inch pin to pap area.

Most drillings in the 3 1/2 to 5 inch pin to pap range are gonna work on medium strong balls.

However if a guy has a 3 1/2 inch pap and buys from a guy with a 6 inch pap then he's gonna often have a problem.  Say the 6 inch pap guy says oh this ball is drilled 3 3/8.  Well for the 3 1/2 inch pap guy it is 1 inch from his pap or vice versa.

Really though it is not that complicated.  For a guy with a normal pap.  YOU! at 4 7/8.  ME at 5 1/4.  Most drillings that were good for another guy are gonna be good for you.

The real rub comes at the extremes of ball strength.  Weak balls and strong balls.

As a medium handed player(you are too) if I drill a real strong ball real strong it is often too strong except on the heaviest oil which I very rarely see in league.  If I drill a weak ball weak it just about is unusable.

I follow this general rule.  Medium balls like other good guys in the house that are standard trackers.  Weak balls I drill stronger.  Strong balls a little weaker.  ie Weak stuff pin is off from the ring finger about an inch.
OR 3 3/4 pin to pap region.  Strong stuff pin is over ring or under and near bridge.

If a guy has a real low track he should never look at the average guys stuff.
Only other low trackers.  Because most of their stuff should be drilled near the bridge or farther away.
