PINplacement & ball reaction
« on: December 10, 2007, 03:52:37 PM »
I had a red zone drilled to be high flaring/ high hooking ball. As i tried it out a friend told me that this ball was drilled to run up the boards. My question is when looking at a drilled ball are you able to tell (in relation to the finger grips) the expected reaction. Any help would be garteful.
the drilling looked similar to this :
-----O-O-pin---
-------cg------
------O--------
--------mb-----

PAP-5 3/16 X 1/2
14-15 mph
tweener

It all depends on the bowlers release. That layout right there is high flaring for me that goes long and makes a sharp turn on the backend BUT with the pap you said there 5 3/16 X 1/2, which is almost a high tracker this layout is going to be a little weaker and probably a very good layout for a tweener type line.

The only thing that you can really tell about layout is how its SUPPOSED to react but you have to keep in mind, Coverstock prep has a VERY BIG factor in what the ball actually will do. For me this is my basic reactions:

-----P----
---O-O---
-----CG--
----O--MB That would equal a long ball with a very snappy backend for me but for another person could be a smooth arcing ball

---O-OP--
----CG---
----O-MB

That would not go as long as the first and me a very hard arc for me.

------P--
---O-O--
-----CG-
----O-MB

That layout is a rolling layout for me which I would use on a Dull ball made for heavy oil.

With these different layouts you will get big different reactions but these are what I see when I throw them...which doesn't mean it will be the same for you. Im a medium tracker about a 4 1/2 x 1 or something around there. The thing about being a Higher tracker if the finger holes are off on the drilling by just a couple 32nds could make a lot of difference as for a low tracker would only see very little difference.

So really the only way to really know what you like is to do trial and error and just see what matches up well and use that layout.

Hope this made some sense and Im not just rambling on..lol

No one can EVER say that.

You CAN say that if a ball were drilled this way for one SPECIFIC person bowling ona SPECIFIC oil pattern that this ball will be better able to play more directly than the SAME ball with a different drill.

You cannot just this drill makes every ball thrown by every bowler on every oil pattern play up the boards. It's physically impossible.

You also should know the bowler's axis tilt and angle of rotation at the release to have an idea how a drilled ball will react on any specific oil pattern. The coverstock's surface actually plays a big role than any drillign pattern.

I think NicholasE gave you a very good idea how things work with different drillings.
