Title: Pitch Drilling
Post by: Reality Check on July 20, 2003, 01:23:41 AM
I am having a long standing problem with friction on the back on my thumb when I bowl, due to the fact that I bend my thumb. I wondered if anyone can recommend any drilling that might prevent me from bending my thumb? Just curious if there is an answer.

If you can bend your thumb, then the hole's too big. If the hole is big enough for your thumb at its largest (everyone's thumb swells and shrinks with time of the day, temperature, humidity, and other factors), then you need to add tape at the back or the front of the thumb hole, so your thumb just barely fits in the hole.

You can also use tape on your thumb or devices like Ron'c Magic Carpet or the ThumbBillow in the hole.

BUT the basics are if you can bend your thumb, the hole is too big. period. (Honestly)

I had a similiar problem. The solution was actually shortening my span by 1/4 inch. Have a local proshop operator recheck your span.

On top of being too stretched, I had too much reverse pitch in my thumb and I had to grip it or the ball would have fallen out. Along with changing the span I changed the pitch. All is well now.

Goodluck

from experience, you should try shortening your span by a 1/16 or 1/8 and try 1/8 forward pitch on your thumb.  what this will do is make you squeeze less and not "grip and rip" as people would call it because you won't have to grip that hard and your release will most likely improve, too.
