Ive never seen the Jonells before. We use the classics in my shop and they work extremly well for us.

I have a cheap tru pitch set!
It is a pain in the neck...BUT I like it!
It is easy to lose pieces...BUT I haven't!
What is cool is first off...it's pretty accurate!
2nd...it's cheap. Third one can use it to get the sizes of hole...and even to get the sizes of oval shapes(so much in the x direction) so much in the y direction).
I use it to find the stuff and fits that seem to really work the best for me!
As a result despite the little irritation of so many pieces it seems to have even more utility than the excellant Classic pitch guages.

DanSweet is dead on here. However, the Jonells are really expensive. Way more than the Classic Pro Set, which is probably why most pro shops that I have been around have the Classic Pro guages and not the Jonells.

In this industry, you get what you pay for.
The Jonell has the best construction overall, easy to read, and I feel it gives the most accurate measurement of pitch.
The Classics are okay, so if you're just getting them for yourself or not running a shop, then you'll be okay.

Jonell = Porshe
Classic = Buick
Tru pitch = Yugo

I flip out ten pins, you flip them off....
Mos cores = Mo scores....

Jonell = Porshe
Classic = Buick
Tru pitch = Yugo
Lol but yeah Jonell are absolutely the best you can buy. The Classic's have to much play in them in my opinion.

does the set come with instructions? I see how they can be useful for hole sizes, but I don't get how they help figure out the pitch - https://www.shop.innovativebowling.com/displayProductDocument.hg?productId=250&categoryId=37

Must be that plastic span ruler looking thing at the bottom of the picture.
Just curious - one pro shop I used has them, but they seem to only use them for measuring hole size, not pitches.
They look good enough for a home driller that is only drilling for 1 or 2 people.

I have had the Tru pitch, they are ok, nothing wrong with them, you have to know or find the hole size to get a true reading. I use the classic set. They work like a charm. Easy to read, find pitch etc so if you are looking to spend a bit, get them, if you want to spend a lesser amount, the tru pitch will work, just takes a bit longer to get the right size/pitch, that's all.

Thanks Azguy. I know my hole size, and I have a brunswick fitting ball, so I should be okay - I'm not planning on drilling for anybody other than myself.
I'd rather save the $120 and use that towards a router/shield/plug cutter.
I just want to play around with some different thumb pitches. $20 every trip to the pro shop is starting to add up! Probably not enough to justify spending all this money on equipment, but it's something that I'm interested in and something to keep me busy.

The accuracy of the Jonell Gauges is second to none. They are the most accurate by far, but it seems more pro shops have the Classic Pro set even though they aren't as accurate because they are cheaper.

qstick777, if you just want them for yourself, maybe a couple friends, then the plastic ones will do the job. I used them as well for finding a pitch on someone's ball when the fingers were not drilled deep enough for the classics. They have a use, a place, I just decided to get the classic set to be more accurate. Jonell's are the best, top notch but the price is as well. I have had no problems with the classics and that's just what I use.
The tru's are easy to use and very cost effective....Good Luck.

Okay, stupid question:
With the classic pitch gauges, which way do you read them? Obviously if you put the gauge in the thumb one way it will read reverse pitch, but if you flip it around it will read forward.
I know it's stupid, but I figure maybe I'm not the only stupid person that doesn't know.

qstick777 -- Figure out which direction the portion of the gauge that's in the hole is pointing. That's the direction of the pitch. -- JohnP
-
Yes...the trus...are slightly slower and subject to loss...but they are cheap and measure BOTH...hole size...and pitch!
Great for a home setup!

Thanks JohnP! I really just didn't think about it - I just remember that when I put the gauge in and then spun it around it was the same, but putting in the other direction. Would hate to have them backwards and tell somebody it is 1/4 left when it's really right!
As always, I think the problem is more with the terminology about forward and reverse, up and down, etc.
I tried to go back and find the post from a while ago about which was which (referencing the grip center, etc) but I couldn't find it.

Ball orientation is fingers up, thumb down. Pitch toward grip center is forward, away from grip center is reverse for both fingers and thumb. Left and right are obvious. -- JohnP

Cool, so if I have the ball fingers up, if I put the gauge in the thumb, I'd want the writing to be facing the right, and for the fingers I would have the writing facing the left.
If I keep the writing facing me (so always facing down), left pitch would be read as "reverse," and right would be "forward."
