how to remove thumb insert?

I stumbled upon a ball on craigslist today for $15 lol. Its a 14# Brunswick strike zone. Its drilled conventional and has a light blue thumb insert that is way too small. Instead of the proshop charging me an arm and a leg, is it possible for me to remove it myself? It seems like the thumb without that insert would be fine just the way it is to use as a spare ball. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Direct Answer:  Depends on what the thumb product is and how much material is there.  If the wall thickness isn't too drastic you should be able to utilize a flat-head screw driver and a mallet to break the slug out.


More Logical Answer:  Throwing a ball that isn't properly fit to your hand isn't a good idea and can cause more harm that the few bucks you save is worth.  Take it to your local shop / driller and have them set it to your span / pitches.  It might not be as bad as you think depending on how far away from your specs the ball is.

Is it a slug or a sleeve?  The light blue color sounds like it's probably a slug.  If so, a driller can enlarge the hole to fit your thumb.  That won't cost much (I don't charge my regular customers at all), and will be a lot better than using the (probably) 1 1/8" hole it fits in.  If it's a sleeve, you can work a small screwdriver between it and the hole until you break all the glue loose.  It should be glued only about the top 1" or so.  Your driller will have a special tool to do this easily and shouldn't charge much.  --  JohnP

my driller is a .......yeah. If its not from his shop he want's nothing to do with it unless he charges you enough. Anyways, I chiseled the sucker out and dremeled the edges. Seems to feel comfortable. For $15 i'm not complaining haha.
