pitch question
« on: February 05, 2008, 01:09:01 AM »
any kind of thumb pitch that i can try that might help me stay behind the ball longer? i'm starting to turn the ball before my hand get anywhere close to the line, and i'm not liking the results. i'm definitely not against practicing and trying to mechanically make it better myself, but if there's some type of pitch that will help...i'd appreciate it. lmk!

i'm not 100% positive but i'm pretty sure it's... 1/2 left and 1/2 under...(toward fingers, that is)

With a 241 average you don't need much help!

Common wisdom says the more left for a righty...the more easy to stay behind the ball.

I recently have been trying MORE lateral under and more reverse and I am finding that it is setting me up to have a more aggressive rotational release.

ie my hand in the backswing FEELS like it is more behind the ball.

I found the same thing in golf.....a more aggressive or stronger grip allowed one to load....use more of a loaded position and then one can be more aggressive where it counts.  So I am starting to think it is with lateral under palm pitch.

One thing I have noticed for me however....lateral under palm combined with forward thumb pitch in front of the charts tends to make me wrap around the side of the ball...prematurely as per your post above.

REgards,

PS if I was rambling I AM saying...I am differing with conventional wisdom here!

1/4 reverse, 1/4 left...sorry forgot about this post a little bit.

I'm really working hard on just, physically doing it right, and i'm so close...a slight pitch change might do the trick. let me know what you think...(again) lol. Thanks.

It's hard to say without being able to "read" your hand. The 1/4 left should allow you to stay behind the ball until release, but also depends on flexibility and thumb hinge.  The 1/4 reverse depends on spans and flexibility.  If you're not having problems hanging in the thumb you might try reducing to 1/8 reverse and see what happens.  --  JohnP

I agree with John P.  When I put lateral out pitches for my lateral under thumb.  Ie not my natural anatomical lateral I'm saying.

I find I need to go quite a bit forward of normal thumb under lateral position. or I will wrap around the side to stop from dropping the ball.

For 1/4 lateral out pitch 1/4 reverse unless your span is quite a bit over 5 inches OR you have a real stiff thumb is a lot of reverse!
