Pitches
« on: June 01, 2008, 05:12:52 AM »
Can anyone give a general description as to what ball reaction each of the following pitches would typically result in.  (Right Handed)

THUMB:
-more reverse
-more foward
-more left (away)
-more right (under)

FINGERS:
-more reverse
-more foward

I understand pitching the fingers and thumb has alot to do with comfort but curious of the reaction results

general explanation:more reverse (thumb)- thumb comes out fastermore foward- thumb stays in longermore away- Hand motion will be more up the back- less axis tiltmore under- hand will come around the ball @ release- more axis tiltFingerFoward- pain- can cause the ball to roll soonerreverse- "feel" ball more on the pads- typically more comfortable

Thumb forward - clean release, less muscle.  Thumb reverse - the opposite.

Fingers - reverse is used according to the amount of inflexibility of the finger tips.  Slight forward - only if the fingers are very flexible.  FINGER TIP ONLY

i found that thumb forward & slight forward fingers gave me the best feel.  i tried reverse in the thumb and it caused me to grip the ball, which in turn made me chicken wing/top the ball cause i was hanging onto it too long.  screwed my game up for several months before i sat down and figured out what the heck was wrong.  i havent tried reverse in fingers yet only cause i like the feel of what i have now.

When I measure in my shop I measure for the most comfortable fit, not for reaction.  In my experience trying to get a specific roll on the ball from pitches and span is harder than learning hand position, speed, and laneplay adjustments.

The fit of a ball is based on the flexibility, shape, and size of one's hand not necessarily how one rolls the ball.  Going against one's natural flexibility can lead to hand problems and can also force you into throwing the ball only one way, when we need to throw it several ways in order to be competitive.

That's not to say don't experiment with your grip.  It took me 2 years of tinkering to where I feel now.  But don't worry too much about changing roll with fit.
