« on: April 10, 2006, 12:37:10 AM »
I posted this a while back and can't seem to find it.  So i'm posting it again.

What is everyones grip specs.  Finger pitches, thumb pitches and spans?  I want to see how many people have went to finger pitches away from the palm.

MF span 4 1/16", 7/16" left, 0 f/r, vise lifts vacu style
RF span 4 3/32", 7/16" right, 0 f/r, vise lifts vacu style
Thumb 1/4" left, 1/4 forward, Exactacator mold with Magic Carpet in the the back and anywhere from 0 to 3 pieces of 3/4" white tape in the front including using various widths of cut down 1" tape for fine tuning depending on the amount of swell.
I keep my thumb VERY tight, when it feels perfect I can pick the ball up with only my thumb while keeping it straight.

For 25 years my span was 4-7/8 x 5.
About 6 years ago after a 3 year layoff I resumed bowling, and a local "expert" convinced me that I needed to lengthen the span to 5 x 5-1/8 and move my reverse thumb pitch from 1/8 to 3/8! Zero pitch on the fingers. I used that for about a year, bowled well with it, but developed tendonitis in the elbow and was splitting open callouses on the fingerjoint creases and really crushing the edges on my finger grips. Dropped to 15# equipment, and went back to my original lifelong 4-7/8 x 5 and 1/8 reverse on the thumb - with no grips. Just recently, I've changed again. Lates specs:

Right-hand.
No grips.
Span (not cut to cut) - 4-7/16 x 4-9/16
MF 23/32 1/4R and 1/2 away.
RF 47/64 1/4R and 1/2 away.
Thumb 1/8 Forward - 0 lateral - 0 offset.
1-3/8 thumb slug custom ovaled.

NO pain anywhere since I got rid of the idiotic 1960's "stretch" span and put some away in the fingers.

Let's see.   Thumbhole is kind of round, feels good.  Finger holes are far enough away from thumb to qualify as a "fingertip", whatever that is.  Nothing hurts when I place the thumb and fingers in the ball.

Geez, what a lame subject.    Almost as informing as "do you us a round ball"???  and what color is it.

Dead bait,

now you're leading us astray. Nothing hurts ... yet is the ultimate error!
Sober up and fly right! It's later than you think!

chitown, (Chicago boy)

C'mon now, you're clutching at straws. just do what's confortable and what works, How far off can you be? How wrong can comfortable AND "works right" be?

There are few guarantees in life and this is not one of them. (No bitter sarcacasm here; just my honest feelings.) Believe in yourself.

I here you charlest.  My original grip just needs the ring finger pitch changed.  The balls are at the shop getting ring finger pitches changed.

The sarge easter grip i'm experimenting with is so I can bowl while my ring finger heals a bit.  Now after throwing with this grip I am finding that I really like it.  It's very comfortable.

Both the grips will be tested tomorrow once I pick the balls up from the shop.  Everything will work out.

It seems everyone uses reverse in the fingers.  I'm the odd man out.  I'm using:
MF 4 11/16 1/8 Fwd 3/8 left
RF 4 3/4   1/8 Fwd 3/8 right
Thumb 1/8 rev 1/8 right

I tried reverse in some experimental balls last year and I found that with the forward I got more length and more backend and with the reverse the ball rolled sooner and had a smoother backend.  I guess I'm still stuck in the 60s to 80s where you had to hit up on the ball.

I have 1/16 forward in both my fingers.  I just dropped balls off at thge pro shop to get the ring  finger pitched reverse.  My ring finger is killing me.  I think part of the pain is from the finger pitch.

It wont hurt to try it.  Who knows I may find that it works better than my forward finger pitch.

chi....it's definitely worth a try, especially if you are experiencing pain.  My fingers are very inflexible and every ball driller that looks at my hand wants to put me in reverse pitch.  The reverse happens to me; when I use reverse in my fingers then I get pain in my ring finger.  Could be a span issue though when I go reverse, not sure.  I am going to play around with some different pitches during the summer to see how different layouts feel.
