I would appreciate any hints on what to do with the vent holes when plugging a hole and not redrilling in that location.

When plugging the thumb, just make sure the plug damn is large enough to get the vent hole also. Done this many times in the shop, never had an issues. Hope this helps.

In the particular case I am dealing with, the vent hole is about 3/4 of an inch away from the edge of the hole. I guess I could use a large oval dam, but the hole is a clean 1 1/4 round, just seems a shame. Maybe a separate small clay dam around the vent?

What i do, is put vise white tape over the vent hole and just plug it. I've done it a lot of times and I've got no problems doing that.

Let me tell you what I ended up doing. Previously, I had just covered the vent hole, but it seemed to get air-bound and did not fill all the way. So this time, what I did is take one of the leftover centers from the plug dams and put a hole in the middle, larger than the vent hole, and put it over the hole. When I filled the main hole, plug material rose in the vent as well. As soon as the plug resin reached near the top of the dam on the vent hole, I put another of those centers on top of the one on the ball, sealing the plug material from going any further. I just cut the plug down with a router and it seems to have worked well. Thanks to all for your suggestions.
