Home Based Drillers
« on: January 03, 2007, 10:11:00 PM »
i have been looking into drilling at home now instead of the shop.  i drive an hour one way to the shop to help out but the drive is killing me.  just wanted to know from you home based drillers on what type of drill press, scale and equipment do you use.  most of my drillings will be for me and my friends.  i know the press at the shop was expensive and not looking to spend that type of dough.  any help would be appreciated.

I got my drill/jig from a K<art that was selling out of the ball/bag/shoe part of it, I spent way less than that. True, it's older, but it's a start and the money I've made will go to a better set up in the future.

Just picked up my set up this weekend

It was a set up from K-mart.  Bought it on eBay - $485 for the drill, jig, 19 bits (20 minus 1 broken), Brunswick fitting ball, letter/number stamper, metal span ruler, some other span measuring looking tools, bevel sander and a bunch of sanding discs.

1200 miles, $150 for gas, $100 for hotel, and 24 hours on the road.  All in all, I'm happy with the set up.

Now, I just have to get the rest of the things - plug, pro-sect, pitch gauges, etc.

Funny thing - the lady was about 4 blocks from a bowling distributor, she probably could've parted everything out for a lot more than I paid.  I stopped by the distributor's shop (GLC in Flint, Mi) to see about buying the plug, etc.  They wouldn't sell to me unless I was a pro shop or had a business/tax ID (wouldn't that make JLS pround!?!).

I'll get pictures posted as soon as I can.

I drill 1000+ balls a year on a Jet Drill with standard Rudell Jig.

It's not worth it to me to get a mill or ovalmatic, and neither should it be for you if you are planning to just drill from home.
