Noob Layout question
« on: January 25, 2010, 11:43:24 PM »
Hi guys,

Im an fairly new and learning the finer aspects of layout and mapping a ball.

1. I was made to understand that mapping a ball involves first finding your PAP, then determine the distance of the pin and mass bias location with respect to the PAP. thus a 4x4 layout means both the pin and mb are 4inches from the PAP. the final location of the pin and cg with respect your finger holes are the result.

2. some of the ball reviews or discussion relating to layout mentions the location of the pin and cg position leaving out the actual layout.

therefore here is where i am confused. the impression point 2. makes it seems as if u determine the pin position while point 1. appears that the pin position are results to the layout selected and bowlers PAP.

is a person able to understand how the ball will react just purely based on pin and cg position like i have read in some of the ball reviews here?

what am i missing here?

PAP is a must to "understand" a drilling. If someone tells you "I have the pin abobe the bridge", this is by no means an indication of what to expect reaction-wise. For a high tracker, this is a pretty weak pin position, for a low tracker it can produce length and a sharp snap.

4x4 and such are better or more informative "coordinates", since these are based relative to the individual PAP and indicate the core''s strength (or how much of its potential is tapped) as well as something about the basic reaction shape (through the CG/mass bias placement). Additional info like "pin above the fingers" and top weight are also helpful to judge a drilling and the reaction results, but this already gets sophisticated.

There are various notations for drillings, and I won''t delve further into the subject. But a good starting point is Lanemaster''s drilling sheet - well hidden on their site, but very comprehensible:

Thanks dizzy, i knew i could count on u.

because i have been drawing blanks when i get involved in ball talk or read ups where only pin position relative to fingers are given, i totally cannot visualize how the core is being placed in relation to the bowlers PAP. so much so to the point where i thought u could map a ball just with that.

Yup. "Ball above ring finger" tells you nothing about the actual drilling. You always need the PAP as reference point for an interpretation - that's why knowing it is so important! Without, you might get along telling your ball driller "this has worked before, please copy the setup onto my next ball". But if the core specs are different, e. g. huge RG differential differences or RG value differences, even the same drilling will yield very different reactions. Then add coverstock materials and surface preparation, and you have additional factors involved... it is really the total ball package you have to look at. The drilling is just one (but important) element, and this makes discussing bowling balls and their reactions and utilities quite complicated
