Depending on what you are having them to do. Like for example I have a shop apprentice that I am training to do everything and I pay him $8.00/hour, straight pay as contract labor. This way I do not have to have insurance on him nor pay social security or taxes. Now there is catch, he cannot work over 20 hours a week per my accountant. But if you are just looking for what I would call a shop helper that just rings up sales and maybe cleans balls then I would not pay them more than minimum wage and depending on your financial situation you may still want to put them on as contract labor.

I am wanting to hire another person to drill and layout but the management wants to start out anyone at $8 an hour. I feel is way to low but i need figures to help convince these people otherwise. If I get someone at that price it will be someone I am going to have to train from scratch and I don't want to to do that if possible.

Yahoo has a Pro Shop Operator's group (see link below). You might want to register there and ask your question. -- JohnP

I think $8.00 is fair for someone coming in off the streets with no training. Depending on the employee discount, I think minimum wage is alright. Considering that internet prices are sometimes lower than distributor rates, just being able to drill their stuff for free should be reason enough to work part-time.
