low tracker + low ball speed help
« on: August 26, 2008, 02:44:15 PM »
I have been drilling balls for a year now and my friend is finally asking me to drill a ball for him.  He's a low tracker/spinner type with an average speed of 12.5-13mph qubica.  A lot of his equipment rolls out and seems to almost back up.

He's looking for me to also suggest the ball he should get for this season.  I am thinking of something pearl but what I'm not sure.  I don't want the ball to roll out but I'm afraid that I'm going to over compesate for his style and pick a weak ball and not drill it strong enough.  He was looking at the T-Road Pearl we have sitting in the shop.  I was fine with the ball choice, but what drill pattern do you think would be best?  I was thinking 4.5x3 or 70x4x35.  I could really use some help nailing this one.

Depending on the amount of oil and the desired reaction you are trying to get, my suggestion would be to close his drill angle some , increase the pin length some and open up the break point angle to some thing like 60x4.5x45, hope this helps!!!!

I'll look into this thanks!!  We bowl on a normal house pattern and wood lanes.  So friction is present.  I see what you're saying tho.  Lowering the drill angle some and raising the angle to val should help the ball and keep it from rolling out on him.

Are you sure his existing balls are rolling out?  Typically, a low tracker/spinner has trouble getting his ball into a roll, it wants to "skate" down the lane.  What are his PAP and axis tilt?  And what type condition is he bowling on?  --  JohnP

No his ball is in a roll at 50'.  You can see it start to make it's move and then it poops.  Like I said, last year you could see his ball almost move left it rolled out so bad.  He said his PAP is 3" right and 0 but I will have to check when I see him.

Be sure to check his axis tilt also.  Even with a low track his tilt might be low, which could explain what you're seeing.  And be sure to check his PAP location on a low or non-flaring ball and then confirm it with a piece of tape.  --  JohnP

Will do John, thanks!!!  If his tilt is low as well, what would be the proper set up(pattern)?
