Heavy oil layouts, for fresh you need an aggressive dull strong core with the pin drilled approx 4 to 4 1/2" from the PAP and 1 1/2 up from the mid line with the mb on or past the val. Use this ball until you have to move in a couple of times, then use a simillar ball aggressive, shiney reactive solid or pearl particle, strong core pin 4 1/2 to 5" from pap pin 2 3/4" up from midline, with the mb 5 1/2" from your pap and either move back one move toward the outside and play the oil line next to the dry boards you created with the dull ball, or move in and swing it to the same point, the dull piece will probably be too aggressive once the lanes start transitioning.

Jim with my PAP being 4"  - would a heavy oil layout place the pin under my bridge or possibly on the negative side???  Is that about right??

Don't worry about the pin being on the negative side, you can go all the way to the track with the pin and it will not adversly effect the ball, Placing the mass bias closer than two inches to your track will how ever. Static weights don't effect ball motion except for weight holes and that is more of a matter of the hole changing the shape of the weight block.

To get the reaction im lookin for I should go about 4" from PAP.. and swing the MB past the VAL about how far????  2"?

Either put the mb on the val or 1/2" past it. I would consult the manufacturer's drilling instructions as well before drilling the ball.

The Visionary AMB Particle has been reported to be extremely strong and early.  I have not drilled one yet, so am just reporting what I've read here and the Visionary site.  I would suggest a 3" pin to PAP and 75 degree MB layout with the pin near the bottom of the safe zone. If that puts the pin too close to a finger hole, modify it so the pin is in the hole, completely drilled out.  That should give a very early and aggressive reaction with strong back end.  --  JohnP

You are probably looking for a simple answer to a complex question. The ball may just be one of the answers. Most bowlers have a harder time bowling on wetter and longer oil patterns. You have less hook area or return area to the pocket until the shot breaks down and gives you more room for hook. On a wetter pattern you need the ball to start earlier. You are looking for earlier roll and reaction. You can do this a number of ways. It may be a more agressive cover stock with a lower rg rating to start the movement earlier. You can not give up the pocket on a wetter pattern. By that I mean do not send the ball too far away from the pocket. Straighter is always better in the beginning on a wet pattern. You should also back off on your speed. Another technique is to move your target area closer to you which would hopefully cause you to roll the ball more and earlier. You also have to consider where your starting target area is on the lane. The further out you go (away from the pocket)the harder it is to hook the ball up to the pocket as the extra oil will probably delay the hook and have you arrive short of the pocket. Heavy oil will also cause a lot more carry down and lengthen the lane. When carry down occurs you can either try to go around it or start the ball sooner with a cover stock change, speed change, less spin from your release. Take one of your reactive balls and wet sand it to 320 and see how it reacts. You may already have the right ball but forgot about changing the cover stock to be more aggressive early. Hope that helps a bit.
