Question about drilling finger pitches
« on: March 30, 2005, 01:24:36 PM »
Hey guys, if I have my finger holes drilled at a certain pitch and i want to change pitches to more reverse say and i don't use finger grips do I have to plug the entire finger holes and redrill through them with the new pitch, just plug some of the hole, or can i change the pitch of the fingers without using any plug?  Cause I do PBA Tournaments and regionals and I know they have a clear plug rule with certain amount of inches around gripping holes cause if I were to plug the fingers entirely and then change the pitch only some of the plug inside the hole would be showing correct?  I don't think any of the plug on the outside would be showing.

Right, that is an option, but i don't think my pro shop guy has those and i have tried using the smallest thumb slug and just cutting it in half and using those but i like the original feel of the ball a lot better that's why I am curious.

Iketown,

We used solid finger slugs to get around the plugging rules. They come in 31/32, the same size as inserts are drilled.

Where can I find solid finger slugs? I've looked at all my favorite proshop supply houses. I cant find any.

Ike -- You want to change the pitch only, not the span, right?  Fill the hole with plug material to about 1/4" below the top of the hole and let it set up.  Then set the drill up to go exactly into the old hole and drill with the new pitches.  There will be no external evidence of the change and if you use clear plug it will be almost invisible inside the holes.  When I do this, I rough the inside of the hole with 100 grit sandpaper and cut a couple of shallow horizontal slits in the side of the hole that will have the plug left after the redrilling, using a Dremel tool with an abrasive blade.  This will create quite a bit of smoke, as the resin melts some - don't breathe the smoke.  I've only done this on holes for grips, but from the appearance of the hole before inserting the grip, I feel sure it will be smooth enough after a little sanding to work without irritating your finger tips.  --  JohnP

Greg T -- Vise makes them, and I think some of the other suppliers do also.  Here's a link to the Vise site:  --  JohnP

Ike,  any plugged ball is allowed in PBA Regionals.  For the National Tour, the clear plug rule applies.  There is a maximum diameter for slugs, don't recall the size or amount visible after drilling.  I'd have to look the rles up to get the specifcs.
