Title: Question about thumb pitch
Post by: Willis on March 26, 2008, 02:34:38 AM
I am right handed and have a 5 inch span and my thumb pitch is 3/8 reverse 1/8 right lateral (under palm). It seem like I really need to get around the ball to get my thumb out, which causes me to be so inconsistant. The ball also likes to hang up on the index finger side of my thumb towards the nail.

If I had the thumb pitch changed to lets say 0 or 1/8 left lateral (away from palm) would this help my thumb come out cleaner without having to get around the ball so much?

Yes,it probably would. In general, those changes would produce a quicker release with less turn needed.

Pooh is right. I had 3/16 right (with 1/8 reverse) and changed to 1/8 left. No more hangup.

i would think to keep some reverse still.  i would go 1/8 reverse and 1/8 lateral left.

I also had the same problem as yours. I changed the thumb pitch from 1/4 right to 1/16 left while keeping the same 3/8 reverse. It resulted in a more cleaner release. Also, be mindful of the bevelness of the thumb, Some people like me have to have more bevel for a cleaner smoother release.

What do you all use to bevel the thumb? I tried using sandpaper, but it seems to take forever. Also how much bevel would I need?

A combination of bevel sander and bevel knife.  I use the sander to put a minimum bevel all the way around the hole and the knife to fine tune the front and sides of the hole.  --  JohnP
