Problems Understanding Track Flare
« on: June 23, 2005, 04:02:15 PM »
I am a 15 game a week bowler, fairly up and coming with bowling ball technology and drilling layouts.  I like to know what kind of layout/ball I will need to have the desired reaction before I go to my Pro Shop.  Anyway, I have been pondering this for a while now.  To my understanding, a bowling ball goes through the pin deck spinning on it's preferred spin axis (provided you throw it good).  If you use a high flare layout, wouldn't that mean that it would take more revolutions/flares on the ball to get to the preferred spin axis.  And vice versa for a low flare layout which to me would seem like it would pick up on its preferred spin axis sooner and as a result, hook more.  Somebody help me!

The following link will take you to an Acrobat Reader file of Pro Shop Notes that explains how a ball flares. The article is very technical and has a lot of diagrams. I found it best to print it out and then read the printed version. Scan it first on your screen, after about 10 or 12 pages it starts to repeat the flare diagrams for different layouts - you may want to skip printing those later pages. Enjoy -- JohnP

Don't be embarrassed - this is not easy reading.  But when you do understand what they're saying it will make you a better driller.  --  JohnP
