Question on pin to cg length and top weight.
« on: November 24, 2024, 11:56:02 AM »
Question: I usually try to use pins that are 3" to 4"  with 3-3.5 ounces of top weight. Just received a ball with a pin of 2-2 1/2 from the cg and only has around 2.0 ounces of top weight. It is also a pearl coverstock. What would you think the ball reaction change be from what I usually use and see? Thanks for the help...

If i remember correctly the core is shifted 1/16" to create a 1" out in pin distance or 1oz of top weight. So moving the core 3/16" could create a 3" pin or 3ozs of top weight in the ball.

Many "proshop" guys for some reason thought the pin to cg distance and top weight on the ball was created by shifting the core large amounts which wasnt the case. They believed that shorter pin to cg balls hooked earlier etc. Lack of understanding fueled by rumors and not actual facts.

Before the current static weight rules depending on the bowlers span and the possible layout trying to be used, certain pin lengths or top weights could be preferred for drilling a particular ball for a specific layout that didnt require a weight hole or wouldn't require a massive weight hole because of the old rules being stricter.

For your case today it is irrelevant but some proshop guys or other "knowledgeable bowler" would probably tell you otherwise.

Guys, I made an error on the top weight in the ball. It is 3.2 oz. I misread the box. Was just wondering what I might expect in reaction difference. Wasn't looking for a "smart xxx" answer. I was asking an honest question. The last ball I had like this was a Brunswick CS series Uni-Max. Liked the ball. But, it was a solid. Looking for an honest assessment.
