Question on the effect of Rg differential
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:15:40 AM »
Basic question...

Understanding that there are many more factors to consider, which is correct for the single factor of Rg differential and its effect?

For a low rev player...

- Higher diff will help create reaction
or
- Higher diff creates the POTENTIAL for greater reaction if you have the revs and friction to pull it off.

In other words... There are many "hooking" balls with lower diffs, I assume based upon the stronger coverstock and desired resultant combination. My concern is the operative difference between "potential" and actual effect.

Or is it basically... Nope, it's the combination that matters, ignore the single factor.

Hope that makes sense, thanks in advance.

Since you mention friction in your second statement, I'd have to go with that as the "correct" choice.

A Bruns Zone X comes to mind for this comparison.  They came in two versions, high diff and low diff with the same cover.

If the "same" bowler were to use both pieces, the high diff piece has the ability to produce a stronger reaction compared to the low diff version.  This is also dependent upon the ball's ability to encounter enough friction so it can then create a "reaction".  Reaction cannot be achieved simply by a ball's design regardless of how high the differential may be.

Somewhat similar to my analogy of spinning our tires in snow, even though we step on the gas harder, this action would not necessarily guarantee a reaction.  I'm basically comparing an engine in a car to a core in a bowling ball effect.  Without the tires/coverstock grabbing for us, "reaction" will not be created.

It also does not require "x" amount of revs to see a difference between the two pieces.  The reaction differences will increase as the bowler varies from matching speed to revs to being slightly rev dominant to highly rev dominant.

Hope this helps some...

Higher RG diff in an undrilled ball gives the potential for more track flare.  The way the ball is layed out determines the percentage of that flare potential that is realized.  Of course, the way the bowler throws the ball also affects the amount of flare realized, but for the same bowler that is constant.  Assuming you have a clean surface when you throw the ball, more flare means the ball is rolling on fresh surface a higher percentage of the time.  The area near the two bowties is where the higher percentage of fresh surface is realized.  (NOTE:  This last statement is strictly my opinion, I've never seen or heard it anywhere else.)  More fresh surface = more friction between the ball and the lane, resulting in more hook, at least to the point where the ball hooks out and straightens.  --  JohnP

That helps, thanks to both for the feedback.
