Questionable Drilling... HELP
« on: November 27, 2004, 12:58:14 PM »
Today I went to pick up my new Goliath from my driller, he works out of his home. (This guy was refered to me by my good friend so I went into this with a certain confidence in this guy) I got my new Goliath and we double checked the inserts and the thumb and what not and I was off to the lanes to test this baby out. Long story short version: this ball did not hook much at all.. it seemd to resist even the friction made by its coverstock..

So I take alook at the drilling on this, here is how it goes:

(Im a right hander, ball had like 3in pin w/ 3.5oz top)

Pin is kicked out 2 inches left of my middle finger and slightly below.

Basicly its a mess.. atleast to my rather untrained eyes...

So is this even a legit drill? what the heck is going on?

Maybe he has an extremely low track...Or he throws a backup ball (reverse hook whatever)...

PLEASE SAY it's one of those, because otherwise it means your driller thinks you're a lefty (or he's trying to make ya one).

Well my track would be consideredt lower than typical, but its nothing too extreme in that sense.

Though today I had a chance to bring the ball back to the driller and he gave one look at it and told me he forgot to drill a weight hole to balance it (exact wording escapes me). So I get my ball back.. now it has the pin kicked out 2 inches left of my middle finger, slightly below, and a weight hole on the opposite side of my grip slightly to the right.. sheesh Im kinda scared to throw it, but I will anyway tommarow night.. any comments would be nice.

OK he definitely screwed up something.  two inches to the side of your middle finger is insane.

Where is the cg?  If he put your weighthole on the right side (ring finger side) then that will do nothing at all.  The only way he would have to put a weighthoel out there is if you had a 7" in out and the pin is all the way over...

I think he needs to get you a new ball.  I would.

Don't expect a miracle. I think your driller screwed up. To the best of my knowledge I can't see why the pin would be on that side that far away from your access point. I would take it to another driller for confirmation.

I forgot to ask......Did he say that he was going to do anything "special" to the ball?  I can't imagine that a driller would just randomly pin the pin in your track without asking or telling you first.

Its legit, but worthless unless your a really high rev player and have trouble with huge hooking balls. That is a lefty drill, and basically give you an extremely tame, very low flare ball. I'd take it back to him, and tell him that your a RIGHT HANDER, and that you want a new ball because it is totally wrong. The very LEAST he could do is plug and redrill it!

Yep, what you describe sounds like pin in/close to the track.  Unless he knows your game, and you bowl on some extreme conditions, he screwed up.  I have used pin in the track with a couple balls, but it was for certain tournament type conditions.  Wouldn't recommend it.  For high track players, can make the ball flare over the finger holes.....  I have a fairly low track, but even sooo...

I would see about getting a replacement.....  It's not a sin, I replaced an Ultimate Inferno last week for a guy.  He tracks a little high, not extreme, but this ball had the pin under his ring, cg out, small hole low.  RRROOOLLLLIIIINNNNGGGG  TTTHHHUUUNNNDDDEEERRR !!!!  Drilled him a new ball, crap!!  He didn't pay for rolling thunder, and you didn't either.
