I have a theory about R.G's
« on: May 24, 2006, 01:45:47 AM »
Granted I have only been in the business of drilling balls for 12-13 years BUT...there has been a theme over the years and seems to be as true today as EVER before.  And that is...

I can really see VERY LITTLE reason for ALMOST anyone to use ANYTHING but LOW (or even ULTRA-low R.G. balls.)

WHY?

-Because with most modern lane surfaces and conditions coupled with shell preparation, there is very little need for a higher r.g. to help get down the lane.

-Low r.g. balls not only hook more for most players, they are more consistent and CARRY better.

-I have considered myself a stroker type player but with good speed and revs but not enough to be considered a power player.  I have found that for all but the Tommy Jones types, this rule applies 95% of the time.  And keep in mind that even guys like Jones and others have looked for ways to TAKE HAND OUT of the ball, so there is such a thing as too much rotation.  But even Jones had lots of success with "The One" which is an ultra low r.g. core system.

Any thoughts???

what about high rev, low speed guy's

what about guardian lanes, wood lanes, summer condition etc..

2nd and 3rd shift on the same oil?

there is very little reason to carry more than 2 or three balls to league. so why not have variety?

put the pin 5"+ from axis and get a ball with a weaker cover and put the pin up. Cover and surface is more imortant than the core with low ball speeds.

Plenty.

I think you have not seen enough of the rest of our bowling conditions. Too damned many of the places I have seen and bowled in, consider oil to be in the same category as money: whenever they use any, they feel they are giving away their children's inheritance.

We need medium and high RG balls to combat the sheer lack of decent oil patterns AND amounts.

Yeah and generally, that's what I am talking about (the last two posts).  I obviously understand a need for different core systems (even 3 pc) for the extreme cases of either lack of speed and or very dry lanes.

I have to admit though that I hadn't given much thought to lane surfaces that are in really poor condition or "late shifts" (what are those? lol) around my area 99% of the houses have good or excellent lane surfaces and modern lane maintenance machines...so I had overlooked the possibility of an older place in poor repair.

I believe that the rg one uses depends a lot on the length of shot or for how long a period of time one can find friction.

NOW I bowl on a shot that is 40 foot application in the mornings but at night they lay a 16 foot short application and leave the carrydown for one's throwing pleasure!

The shot is on anvilanes.  The highest RG I hardly ever use successfully is a Hot Rod Super Sport Pearl at 2.54.

Anything higher I experience what is called the big kahuna over/under.

I often find when it is really hooking the best balls for playing straighter are still low rg(like 2.52) but also low flare.  2 that I have found that almost work well on this tough shot for me are the AMF VP2 and the Panic.

I've also had a real nice practice session lately with a ravege.

Balls like the Supercharge(2.45) that have almost worked for me on this shot above...have in the past been way to strong for a 35 foot shot that was out in my home house in Florida...these balls would rev too early and be out of gas before the pins.  Also on this 35 o 36 foot shot I could use higher RG balls like the Rotogrip Retro Blue and a Dynamic Groove or an Ebonite tornado.

Around here we also have a fresh and very oily 40 foot shot at another center with a new (slightly more textured Brunswick anvilane surface) despite the oil in the center I can move out to 4 to 5 to 8 and play a Dynamic Groove straight up anywhere between 5 or 8 and have experienced a lot of very fun and powerful looking strike strings.

To summarize...I believe a lot has to do wih the length of the shot combined wiht how much surface friction is applied by the underlying surface in selecting coverstock and rg!

PS bottom line I feel if you want the ball to be making it's move right at teh end of the pattern for reactive and in the pattern for newer stronger covers go with low rg.
PPS if you experience a lot of friction in the front of the lane and you want a ball that will not hook till quite a few feet past the (length) oil linethen higher rg CAN still work!
