Recommendations needed...
« on: February 08, 2005, 05:40:10 PM »
Hi, need help/confirmation on what do layout for a team mate.  His release is about 70 - 90 degress(thumb) a bit on top, with very little fingerwork (lift).  A Primetime pearl he has just refuses to turn over.  His preferred line is around the 2nd arrow area, with a little belly of about 4 boards.

I was thinking of:

pin 4 or 5 oclock under ringfinger, about 1.5 inches, (or max of 3 inches from his pap, whichever is better)
CG either stacked or 1 inch closer than pin to his pap...
wt hole if needed: I would probably place it on the V.A.L. about 1.5 inch below the pap.

pattern to be used on would be: light oil at about 36 to 38 feet (oil carry currently not a concern, mild backends (a big concern, as flat hits about), Poranvil synthetic lanes.

any and all suggestions welcomed, even ball suggestions(please limit to mid priced balls)..

regards

Ambi - What is his axis tilt and PAP measurements.  What does he want the ball to do?  Early roll, skid snap Hook set, Late break?

What is his ball not doing that he needs it to do?

What is his layout now?

hi Doc, been sometinme, thanks for the reply, The Author got, basically the ball isn't finishing, I will try to tape his pap this friday to see the axis.  Problem with people here, is very few, know their pap, so I will try to measure it too.  originally the ball was drilled stacked approx 4 X 4.  It just went long and did a slight (read: very slight) curve. so washout and buckets were all around.  His driller, (who never heard of the rev-lev layout until we talked), said it was rev-lev... I just mentioned it wasn't.  currently the layout is pin about 4 inches from pap, below ring, cg staight line towards pap.  So I told him that probably even worse...

I threw the ball, couldn't get too much speed on it, as the thumb size is about 3 drill bit sizes bigger, but its definitely not the ball.

Joecr... yup, lessons will do wonders, but he is a 2 leagues a week bowler, and he has a respectable 195 ave on different houses.. so I doubt if I could talk him into taking lessons.. he isn't technically topping the shot, neither is his swing a chicken wing.. the best I could describe is the really is no finger work.  its like the palm is responsible for the revs.. dunno if I have described it so you guys could understand.. a clue would be a totally virgin thumb.. I am suspecting the lag time between thumb and finger exiting might be too short..

thanks for the response.. keep them coming..

Try some negative side and bottom weights. They are weights that get the ball rolling early, which is needed for a spinner type bowler.

Also, place the pin closer to his track with the CG at 3:00 to the pin. This will start the ball sooner as well. Use symmetrical core balls, as they tend to roll earlier. =:^D

Is this guy a spinner?

What is his track diameter?

I used to have a a PAP of 4" but I had an axis tilt of 10-13.  Circumference of 11 1/2.  No spinner here.

Light oil at 36 feet How many revs to the pocket?

Doc - no not a spinner.. I looked more closely at his shot last friday.  His other balls were working, i.e. long skid and a small hook at the end.. the Primetime was not.. until I noticed, sometimes he would sort of be topping the ball and his swing was crossing his body... AND I REALIZED.., the ball was falling off his hand, and his hand was chasing it, that's why sometimes his swing would cross over his body, and he couldn't lift.  So I asked him, was the fit the same... IT WASN'T.

Now, the funny thing is, this discussion wouldn't reach this point, if I had heard him complain about the thumb fit, heck I wouldn't even have needed to post.. but he was wondering why the ball wasn't hooking out loud, and never mentioned about the difference it fit... Oh well, another lesson learned in this classroom called life.. I'm amazed that a bowlier at that level, is questioning the ball more, than the fit..

my thanks to all who responded,

regards and happy valentine's day..
