Pearl Ogre Control Drilling
« on: February 11, 2008, 10:27:21 PM »
Im looking at putting a good reliable control drilling on a Pearl Ogre.

Ive looked for a ball for sport patterns with a med oil rating. The Pearl Ogre seemed to be the exact ball for that setup.

Now I want a control drilling on it. Something reliable but still able to handle some carrydown. I was torn between the RICO drill and the one that Visionary themselves put up as a control drill. Ive asked for a pin of 1 to 2 inches to try the drilling (4 5/16th span).

Anyone have an idea as to which or others that would be better?

Ive always used pin up balls as I bowl on wood lanes with light/med oil but theyve gone to an almost flat pattern now that has quite a bit of carry making it very jumpy with the balls I have. I also used to track high (clipping thumb) but Ive lowered my track to about 3/4 of an inch away from the thumb recently.

My other specs are in my profile as you will see.

Many thanks.

I'm not going to suggest a layout star...not a drilling guru.

BUT, I will tell you this the Pearl Ogre is a control ball to start IMO.  I have one with pin over ring 4.25" pin to PAP 90 deg. layout and it's not a snappy ball more arc.  I can use it just the way it is on medium to drier-medium sport conditions.  Good benchmark ball for a pearl kind of like the Radar but little less strength than the original Radar.

Thanks scotts33 I thought it may work with just a normal 4X4 or 5X5 layout and you seem to find thats true.

Dont really think I can go wrong whatever drill I put on it as Ive always had weaker balls but big backend for my centre and because I tracked so high I needed pin above. The lowering of my track just gives me the oppotunity to try a "control drill" if I can ever find out what a true one is.

Thanks again scotts

Do you all find it OK for carrydown with the pin above drilling?

Thats why I was thinking of getting it to start a little earlier than I would normally do with my equiptment.

Also would knocking the shine off it with say 4000 abralon do the trick?

Thanks again.

I've taken mine down to 4000 abralon.  Smoothes it out.  It handles a lil carry down but if there is a lot I tend to go around it if the lanes allow me to do that.

Used it last night on a THS that carries down 1st generation Bruns. Anvilane.  Most if they did not have large aouts of ball speed could not play the track ball were jumping high and thru the nose.  I could stay in the track with the Pearl Ogre and play 13 at the arrows to 6-7 at break point <around the carry down> that worked well.

My problem is that somehow outside 8 at the breakpoint is unstable from the start. The techies dont know whats causing it except the lanes feel "waxy" out there. Their words.

Therefore youre forced to play inside 10 most of the time and thats why we have so much carrydown maybe due to the fact they use a very low viscosity oil. Theyre cheap.

Wood lanes and low viscosity oil plus heating on high equals tough conditions !!!!!!
