Title: relaxed or stretched.
Post by: chitown on March 17, 2006, 06:40:47 AM
How many of you guys use a relaxed span or a stretched span?  Which do you prefer and which feels better.  The reason I ask is because a stretched span for me feels better in my hands before the release but have had better results from the relaxed span.

i can get "more" on the ball with a relaxed span of 4 1/4 with the fingers 1/16 bigger. than my regular span of 4 11/16 and finger of 25 & 23. I like the relaxed span especially on a ball with a skid flip reaction.

My "old" span stretched was 4 3/4....last year I dropped to 4 3/16 which worked great in the old wood house I was bowling in. When I moved to a new house this year, it didn't have quite the finish I wanted. Now I'm at 4 3/8 which is giving me the look I want...and my hand feels great at the end of a long tournament weekend.

Chi.....I've always been an advocate of using different grips to facilitate a better look on the lane.  I've always been ridiculed for this "just because".    If a conventional, semi, relaxed, or stretched is fitted properly to you, you can switch grips without big problems.

If your situation calls for a heavy oil ball with a strong roll, by all means, stretch the grip a bit.

If the shot is calling for a grip it and rip it, lots of rotation, shorten the span a bit.

For toast, drill a dry lane weak type resin with an Easter grip but put a semi grip in middle finger.

I always thought that the stretched span gives the most revs.  I thought that it creates more time in between the thumb and finger exit.  Am I worng with this thinking?

I have both. Relaxed span for my middle finger because at stretched it will cause blisters on the end joint and stretched for my ring. But before going to this i was full relaxed and i found that it gave more revs and a slightly lower track.

A relaxed span is best for me. I don't feel like I have to "grab" or squeeze the ball any. I don't feel as in control if it's too stretched out.

I used to use a steched span and recently went down to a relaxed and I have had a lot more success since making the change and I can get more revs and I have more control.

stretched span for me.  feels better.

but as wierd as it seems, the ball i tend to score the best and am more consistant with is really short when i measure with my thumb in the thumb hole and lay my fingers over the holes.

I use a relaxed span.  My ring finger span is longer than my middle finger span.  This offsets my thumb which allows for more of my palm on the ball and is comfortable.  I get a good amount of revs from this span.

A couple of days ago I picked up a ball for my teamate for league tomorrow.  Well I put my fingers into it.  His span is really stretched for me but actually feels great.  I really feel like I am more under the ball while holding it.  I'm going to try his during practice before league starts.  I don't think I will change my span but if I did I would go to an in between relaxed and stretched span.

I have learned the last couple of years that once you find a span and pitches that work well don't change them.
