Removing slugs

What has been the best and easiest way to remove slugs without damaging the ball in your opinion.  I have heard some pretty odd ways of doing it....Opinions?

I need a 1 3/8" bit.  Would make life a lot easier.

I also utilize the method that stormpowerstroker describes and it works very well.
