Is there an easy way to remove slugs and switch-grips?
The largest bit I have is 1 1/4", but I haven't found an "easy" way to remove 1 3/8" slugs or the 1 1/2" switch-grip outer sleeves.

You need a 1 3/8" bit or a 1 1/2" bit....you can get the switch-grips out with a bit of coercing.....but you take a risk of butchering the ball.

with a 1 3/8 slug you can just drill the centre of the slug out with the 1 1/4 and you can use a flat head screw driver to take the rest out. if you have to plug the ball you will have to cut the edges of the hole to make sure it's sharp.

Okay, that's pretty much what I've been doing, just wanted to see if there was an easier way.
The slugs are okay, but the switch grips are a pain - I've done my fair share of butchering! I might try to see if I can rig something up with my dremel to cut the plastic. Plugging the 1 1/2" hole is bad enough without having to route the edge even more!

How much are those? Last one I saw was around $200 - haven't seen anybody selling them other than switch grip.
I could make it really easy on myself and just not buy any used balls with switch grips installed!

Yeah but all it takes is butchering one high end ball and that $200 isn't so expensive anymore.

The $200 you're talking about is with the drill stopper included. I'd contact Turbo direct or ask your local shop about doing so. It isn't cheap, as a 1 3/8" runs me about $60.

Might give that a shot - just recently broke down and bought the 1 1/4" bit. My thumb is small enough to get away with using 1 1/8" slugs - had a hard time justifying "needing" a 1 1/4" bit and spending the $50 for that.
Add another $60+ for a 1 3/8" and $??? for a 1 1/2" bit (really haven't seen a regular 1 1/2" bit, only the siwtch-grip with stopper) that I will rarely use and now I'm not saving as much money by drilling for myself.
Of course, like Russell said, it probably won't take me destroying many high-end balls before I bite the bullet.
Either that or maybe I should give switch grip a try! Might the best thing since sliced bread!

I'm not a fan personally, but others have had success. I've had 2 customers break tabs on the inner and almost cause injury on the lanes. Slugs or exactacation for my customers, with the occasional vinyl insert.

There used to be a pro shop tool called the Slug puller. It was used to pull out old slugs and custom thumb inserts. I have never seen one but I may try to reinvent one, lol!!!
Problem now would be that Vise slugs are shaved to fit flush in the bottom of the hole so there would not be any room to get a tool under. beans

If I'm plugging the ball, I just use a 1 1/2" spade bit to square off the top 1/4" of the hole, then I drill out the slug. Since you're plugging, a square edge is more important than a precision hole, and the bit only costs $8 or so.

hammer and flat head screwdriver can do the trick only if plan on plugging the hole.

I use a hacksaw blade to make 2 or 3 vertical cuts in the slug or switchgrip then use a flat blade screwdriver to pop one of the pieces out. Usually The slug comes out pretty easy after that.

get a roto zip for 30-60 bucks. they cut vertical like a drill and horizontal like a hacksaw. you can use them to shape your thumbhole too if you need an oval hole. i got the deluxe model with the adjustable speed. a must have.
