I am considering putting a small amount of reverse pitch in my finger holes. I have a 5"+ span and am starting to have some pain in the first joint of my middle finger. Also, I have read some posts on this board about using reverse pitches on longer spans. I currently use no forward or reverse pitch in my fingers and use the semi grips. Would these grips be countering the effects of putting reverse pitch in the fingers and should I just go with the regular ovals?

Mogators -- For a relaxed fingertip grip, I would recommend 1/4 reverse for the MF and 1/8 reverse for the RF. Add enough reverse (usually about 3/16) to the holes you drill for the grips to offset any forward pitch built into the grip. I am not familiar with the type grips you are referring to. If they are designed for you to put your fingers in to a depth half way between the joints, I would recommend you change your spans and go to a relaxed fingertip grip. The old semifingertip grip has not been recommended for years because of damage to the finger joints. -- JohnP

JohnP, he is refering to the molded grips themselves, not the semi drilling. See drawing above under A_AK57's post & you'll see what grip he is talking about. You & I are on about the same page when it comes to finger pitches I believe.

Andy, that's them exactly....I don't understand what they are for or how they work or etc., when they are so far down in the hole.

mogators, yes they are reversable, but how are they used, what are they for, etc.? Andy and I both wonder about this.

Brickguy, those grips are meant to be used for the semi fingertip drilling. The hump would actually fit right at the first joint as the fingers are inserted deeper than with full fingertip. We use them in the full fingertip drillings, however, & the bump actually contacts just behind the pad of your finger. If you take the point of your left thumb & apply pressure below the last joint in the finger, you will be able to see how the bump works. I guess you need to also kink the tip of your finger & apply pull pressure. Also, those grips are just very comfortable.

Wayne, thanks for the information. That is what I was guessing they were. I ordered and received a week-ten days ago, some 20 of those grips in two sizes (10 each size) with the power lift on one side and semi on the other. When I ordered them, all it said was power lift on one end and semi on the other so I assumed the semi was like the Turbo Power Ovals of which I also use. I thought that I would have grips with power lift on one end and a grip like the Turbo power ovals on the other. Had I known they are what they are, I would have ordered the combination of power lift on one end and oval on the other.

Here's what I tried. I put 3/8 reverse in both fingers and it felt much more comfortable. The problem was the ball I tried it in had the thumb hole way to large, not sure why since it must have fit me years ago when I was using that ball. Guess that weight loss program has really slimmed my thumb down.

I had about 7 pieces of tape in the thumb and was still losing it off my hand early. I am going to slug the thumb and retry it. In the mean time, I am going to go ahead and have the fingers in one of my current arsenal plugged to be ready to redrill them. I may only put 1/4 in that ball though.

mogators -- The reverse pitch in your fingers has taken the tension (from forcing stiff joints) out of your grip and essentially shortened your span. Of course, the weight loss is also a contributory factor. You need some combination of lengthened span, smaller thumb hole, and less reverse thumb pitch. If your driller has an adjustable fitting ball, set your current spans and thumb hole size in it, then play with the spans and pitches until you get the feel you like. Try up to 1/8" longer spans and/or 1/8 less reverse pitch. -- JohnP

Would say that thumb pitch should be set by itself and then fingers should probably be set reverse slightly for that lenght span and if one finger is greater length than the other...that longer finger should have a little more reverse than the shorter finger.

So far I have tried it and sort of like the feels and the roll.

I ended up with a little more forward in thumb and more reverse in fingers.

Not a bad feel but not on my main balls...still testing(and I have almost 90 degree finger joints...not quite).

I may be on to something here. I took the old 16#er back in and slugged the thumb and tried out some new pitches. Here are all the changes: went from 0 to 3/8 reverse on the fingers, dropped reverse on thumb from 5/8 to 3/8 and went to 0 lateral from 1/16 under. Span left at 5 1/8 middle and 5 1/4 ring. Threw a couple quick games with it and it seemed to come off my hand very good without having to monkey around with a bunch of bevel and scraping on the sides of the thumb. Now I am having this done to one of my 15# arsenal balls, even though its a ball I have not really even used this season (Storm Atomic Charge). This will maybe force me to throw it a couple of weeks and then if all is well, get all my Brunswick balls switched over. Thanks to eveyone who provided input.

Mogators, glad to hear you are having some early success with your pitch changes. If you get them dialed in, & it reduces your finger pain, I would say time & money well spent.

Ah yes...thought you might...but...only because of the front thumb flexibility test I did and the bunneta method....testing NOT done!
