snappiest drill?
« on: January 02, 2006, 01:51:38 PM »

lable has been pretty good so far, but is there anything else?

There is no cookie cutter drilling that will make the ball flip.  Depends on the ball and the style of the bowler.

That being said, from what I've seen, the flip drillings tend to be rather unconventional.  I had a Thing drilled, I believe it was 5.5 x 3, big weight hole, pin was above the middle finger, that provided a hockey stick type reaction.  Had a Synergy ETS, short pin, CG was between the finger, pin directly above that, weight hole past that, also provided a big backed.

3 3/8 x 3 3/8 usually provides the most backend

I like the 4 1/2 by 3 1/2, with a high rg ball, shiny cover and dry boards it would be almost uncontrollable.

Pin height above the midline plays an important factor too.  4" pin to PAP 1" above the midline is going to react much different than 4" pin to PAP 3" above the midline.

not for me, not for alot of people. its too strong of a drill pattern to conserve energy for the backend.

If I want a ball to really wheel on the backend I have found that pins above the finger lines seem to do the trick.  The pin distance to pap will all depend on the amount of  revs you put on the ball.  If you have a good amount of revs then I would suggest a pin distance of 5.5 to pap and if your a lower rev player then I would suggest a pin distance of 4" to pap.  Just keep the pin above the finger line.

with which being stronger on the back?

The higher you place the pin, the more energy saved, therefore a pin height of 3" above the midline would give you more hook down the lane.

Just a thought guys. When you put the pin higher above the midline you are also drilling the thumbhole more into the bottom of the weightblock which can cause the differential to change. This could be partly responsible for a more snappy reaction. I don't know for sure just thinking outloud. What do you think?

Depends on ball design (core, coverstock), lane condition and bowler style. From what have seen and from personal experience, pin above the fingers and the MB in a strong position (90° from PAP) creates the most spectacular results, with a good range for adjustments (pin farther away from PAP for dry conditions, closer to PAP for more and earlier "action".

I have a Reaction Rip drilled with pin above the bridge and MB right of thumb, It is a 4+" pin out, too, intended for dry conditions. Well, this thing has the sharpest and latest hook for a symmetric core ball I have seen so far. Goes 45' and then turns to the pocket in a hockey stick-like fashion. Could also result from drilling the thumb hole into the core, since it shifted into this area, but I am not sure about this.

From what I read in BTM they say the same thing.  The author also said that pins above also increase the RG of the ball which helps it save energy.

My favorite drill layout; which I have on my main 4 ball arsenal is pin above the bridge in between the fingers and cg kicked right to 1oz and no balance hole.  I have all four balls with that same layout.  I let the cover and cores seperate the ball reactions fro each other.

My favorite drill lately is pin 3&3/4 above midline, pin to pap 5&1/2", 25 degree backend. Gets good length, and a continues arc to the pocket.

just curious to why you would drill all the balls in your arsenal the same...?
