Switch Grip Shrinkage?
« on: August 28, 2006, 06:03:39 PM »
I'm having a problem with several of the switch grips, particularly, the outter sleeve. On 5 balls in which the outter sleeve initially fit correctly they are now so tight as to not accomodate the inner sleeve. Thus far this has happened on a Nemesis, Track Desert Heat, Ambush , Strike Zone and Vapor Zone.

The strange thing is that all these sleeves originally fit correctly. I'm at a loss to explain why over time they would "shrink". None of these balls have been left in the car or exposed to unusual climatic conditions. In fact, none of them have been used since the end of last season.

The outter sleeves on these balls have become so tight that inserting and locking the inner sleeve is next to impossible. If the inner sleeve is turned even a fraction of the way it is near impossible to get out. I literally have bruises and red pressure points on my thumb from extricating these sleeves.

I'm concerned that this problem may continue to affect other balls at any time. It's definitely a mystery to all I've exlained it to but nonetheless a reality.

Is my driller doing something wrong during the installation process?

Sounds odd.. I've been using Switch Grip for about a year now and have never heard of any cases like yours..

If you contact Turbo, please update on your situation..

Hope you figure something out.. I gotta say that i could not imagine not having Switch Grip anymore.. Greatest invention in bowling in years..

Good luck with it..

I sometimes have this problem when it gets humid.

Here's what I discovered today. An inner sleeve drilled 1/4 left, 1/4 reverse was actually slightly larger than the other inner sleeves I regularly use (I use o/o, 0/--1/4 reverse and 1/4 left 1/4 reverse all on a regular basis, the first two being the most often used). My driller reamed out one of the balls outter sleeve and it was able to accomodate the 1/4-1/4 sleeve o.k. but not as effortlessly as I'd prefer.

So, this explains why "all of a sudden" the inner sleeve wouldn't fit. It was simply due to changing over to the slightly larger one. Since I have a very large inventory of equipment (http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/9214/img4902bj8.jpg) and tend to rotate it quite often I mever caught onto the correlation.

The strange thing is that about half my balls had the switch grip installed by another driller and all the inserts--even the slightly oversized one--fit in those balls with no problem. In fact, many of them lock into place with not much more than a feather touch while the other drillers go in much stiffer with more resistance.

Both these drillers are top notch but the one whose inserts fit with no problem has been doing the switch grips for a much longer time. I think it's a matter of procedure. We'll figure it out.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I would check the drill bits. Sharp bits cut a thighter hole.

Or the bit could have been improperly sharpened, slightly reducing the diameter of the hole it drills.  --  JohnP

Switch Grip outer sleeves are slightly larger than 1-1/2. What you need to do is:

1. Drill the hole.

2. Take an outer sleeve and try to push it into the hole.

3. If there is any resistance take the bevel sander and open up the hole until you can put the sleeve all the way and take it out without difficulty.

4. Scuff the outer sleeve and scribe a line from the notch on the top down the line going down the sleeve caused by the molding process.

5. Take a 5 or 15 minute epoxy mix then take a popsicle stick and apply epoxy around the hole being careful not to apply too thick or it will get in the locking mechanism.

6. Insert the outer sleeve and align the scribe mark with the center line. Let epoxy set for time specified on box.
