Rico & Jones lay out question
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:36:33 AM »
This is for a friend so not sure if it can be answered.I do not know his cooridinates so this may be a reach. But A teammate of mine has tried a Tommy Jones and a Rico layout and both layouts cause him to roll over the thumb. He is a lefty tweener with above average speed.I am thinking the weight hole is probably the problem. How does he find the right spot for the weight hole?

If he's tracking over the thumb hole...his release is the problem.

His PAP is most likely in excess of 6" over if he's hitting thumbhole.  This will make both layouts catch holes due to their sensitivity and tendency for very low flare.

His other balls probably catch the thumbhole as well....but flare more so they don't look like they do.

Weight holes down do not cause the ball to flare over the thumb hole, that is release angle. It generally means that the bowler's thumb is staying in the thumb hole through the rotation too long. He possibly needs to try to go away with the lateral thumb pitch, to get it off their thumb earlier in the rotation, thus lowering the initial track, in relationship to the thumb hole.

I don't mean to insult you, your friend, or the driller, just don't have any idea of your expertise levels.  Can we assume the driller knew to reverse the layouts from the drill sheet so they would be for a left hander?  --  JohnP

I had a TNV drilled with the Tommy layout and it was from from low flaring.
