does the postion of cg make a difference?
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:38:13 PM »
if the cg is offset to either side of a line drawn from the pin to the mass bias
does it affect how the ball should react if no weight hole is needed to keep the static weights legal? i know that for a right hander if the cg is further away from
the grip center the ball will have more positive side weight than if it is closer
to the grip center and may need a weight hole because of this which will affect a
ball's reaction but for the sake of argument i'm assuming that the static weight will still be legal. will one ball have a different roll and if so what would it
be for the average semi roller if the pin and mass bias are in the same position but the cg's were in different spots?

iron, an otherwise innocent question will turn into an ugly war.

You've just open the "cgnomaddah" discussion which is part Roe vs. Wade, part Pandora's Box, and part Rosa Parks.

I'm going to make an attempt to answer this as quickly ans cleanly as I can. The CG is a tool used to shift the "heavy spot" around to various places allowing you to choose the size and position of the weight hole if you decide to use one. A balance hole can be used to fine tune the ball reaction by altering the core mass and therefore increasing or reducing the track flare. This is the simple answer. Please, everyone, let it suffice.

Should have opened a topic about creationism vs evolution instead.  It would get less messy.

Uh, qualifies for "most risky question of the year" - and we are only 6 days into 2008! I'll keep watching from far, but dare not post an answer myself... it's like bungee jumping - seek the thrill, start the war

Loaded question?  Maybe, maybe not.  Okay, I'll bite:

Check out the following:

http://www.bowlingwiki.net/wiki/index.php/Center_of_Gravity

http://www.bowl.com/articleView.aspx?i=13354&f=21

http://brunsnick.com/cg_nomaddah.html

http://brunsnick.com/cg_nomaddah2.html

USBC final position is
quote:

In closing, both sides of the center of gravity debate should be able to appreciate this study, since it does show a difference between positive weight and side weight; however, that difference only amounts to about a 10 percent difference overall in change of position on the lanes.
