Bowler with carpel tunnel.
« on: July 04, 2015, 03:04:25 PM »
Got a question on how to address a my span and pitches. I have carpal tunnel, and want to know how to fix my span and pitches to address wrist and and pain. I currently have 0 lateral thumb and 1/8 reverse fingers are 1/2 forward. Any suggestions on pitches. Also I was thinking about decreasing my span length by 1/8 or 1/4 to be more relaxed or less stretched. Current span is not really stretched but thinks of relaxing it. Let me know what you guys think.

Decreasing span will help with any form of tendonitis. But the secret to curing carpal tunnel is to not put pressure on the tendons. NOt reduced pressure, NO pressure.

So you've got to either stop bowling or get the surgery. I suspect my posting comes from having had carpal tunnel in both wrists and having had the surgery in both wrists. It is actually quite a simple and painless surgery, when done correctly.

See an orthopedist and have him/her measure the electron flow through your wrists. That will tell you the extent of the current damage currently be done to your nerves by the swollen tendons in the carpal tunnel,  which can turn permanent. That means you will have zero feeling in your fingers for the rest of your life. Then bowing will be the least of your worries.

I agree with charlest.  Get the wrist checked first before anything else.   After that, you can look at span and/or pitch changes if it's needed.

I have got the wrist checked and carpal tunnel but not a major case. Doc said that I needed to work on my bowling grip to ease tention but did not tell me to stop bowling.

The next best thing to do is to reduce pressure on the tendons. They get overstressed when you try to put apply more force than your muscles are capable of applying. Don't forget the tendons are the attachment of the muscles to the bone. What you apply with your muscles go through the tendons to the bone.

So increasing the strength of your wrist, forearm and hand, can help reduce tension on the tendons. BUT any exercise that does this will necessarily put pressure on these same tendons; so the help of a physical therapist (prescription from the doctor) is necessary so you don't overtax those tendons and make the carpal tunnel worse.

As far as reducing pressure via your grip, (as far as I have learned) forward thumb pitch and reverse finger pitch will help. But these potential grip changes have to be worked out with a well educated driller, in person.  Plus the span changes with any pitch changes.

Next a good wrist device will also help reduce pressure on the tendons. I have used this device in the past to help with severe tendonitis in my ringer finger.
