Rico layout

 Is this layout mainly good for tougher conditions and not so for THS? I do plan on bowling summer sport, but that's just for a few weeks. I also do tourney's, but most of them are THS. throughout the year, I think I bowl only 2 or 3 tournaments with tougher patterns and the rest are THS with length of 39' and up and on the light/drier side. NorCal bowling centers are tight about putting more oil down....maybe it's just AMF houses...

Do I really need a ball with this layout?

The layout isn't specifically for anything, it just manipulates the core to create a different motion down the lane.  It lowers the RG while keeping up the differential so the ball will tend to roll a little smoother off of the dry boards.  It's not necessarily "better" on any particular condition, it just depends on who is throwing it.  Same way a pin above the fingers isn't necessarily better for a house shot or sport shot....it just creates a different motion.

Little known fact:  In Russian "Hope" and "Change" translate to "Tax" and "Spend"

I tend to use this drilling on balls that I can't seem to control. I know everyone talks about the VG as being a rolly ball, but for me......since I'm rev dominant, the ball was a skid-flip monster that I could not control until I rico'd it. I did the same thing to my Cyclone solid, although that ball is still a beast, even with the rico drilling.

It's just a specific drilling for specific individuals for specific conditions.  May or may not work for you.  All depends on your pap, and whatnot.  If you want smoother/rollier shape on the lanes, sometimes a short pin to pap will work.

Hi James

This layout for the most part is one of control and more or less enhances the overall performance of the bowling ball. It will tend to blend out wet dry front to back when the condition is very flat in the back or the volume is low and wet dry side to side....higher amount of volume in the middle and extreme friction on the outsides.
If you are planning on bowling events that have a lower ratio of volume across the lane-2-1 3-1 types or sport conpliant tournaments I would recommend.
It will react different than anything else in your bag.

Any particular type of ball work better with a Rico drill (e.g. Hybrid Symmetric with a 3 1/2 pin to cg perhaps).

the way I look at it is that it enhances whatever the characteristics of the ball are. If you are looking a good go to type reaction that has a wider range or versatility, I would suggest a med-dtrong cover with a diff in the range of .04-.05
But you can use it on any bowling ball it just enhances it's reaction.
