what are the differences in reactions between these layouts?

Depends on a lot of things. Conditions, ball type, coverstock, and core.

For a very generic answer, I will say this.....both reactions are very smooth and controllable. The rico, however is controllable on a wide range of conditions, whereas, for me, the pin axis drilling is rather condition specific!

I generally only use pin axis on extremely dry, flying backends. When I've tried using it on various oil conditions......I may hit the pocket....but I will get some really exotic splits, and leaves that I've never seen before, mixed in with a few strikes, here and there. Hope that helps.

You will see both balls roll pretty early and be very smooth. But the biggest difference is the pin axis layout will not flare and the Rico will. Because of that difference, the Rico layout will have more hook potential.

Both are early & smooth..
Rico: Smooths front to back. More continuity, more versatile.
Pin axis: Hook-set type of reaction. Less continuity, better for straighter angles (in comparison to Rico)..

For me, pin-axis works on shorter patterns when playing extreme outside part of the lane trying to let the ball get in to roll as soon as possible and reduce backend reaction.
Rico, again for me, is better for controlling the backends in medium to heavier sport conditions, especially in fresh.
Due to my slower speed and relatively high rev rate, I did not like both in typical house shot conditions.

Hope this helps,
