Pin position do''s and dont''s
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:40:40 AM »
Hey all. I am a high track player and I''m curious if there are pin position or lengths I should avoid? Example: should I not put a pin more than 4" from my pap? Should I keep it above my fingers or doesn''t it matter? I have a csystem 3.5 with a layout of 55x5x70 which puts the pin real close to being right under my bridge. This is the only ball of the 10 I own that rolls over the thumb and I wonder if it''s because of the layout.   My pap is 5-1/2" over 1/2" up  righty. Thanks

I have the same pap as you, only an inverted track. I have been able to use pins as far away a 5 1/2" from my pap with no tracking problems at all.

The only layout that I need to adjust was the "rico" layout. I had to put it a little higher to avoid tracking ovr the holes.

You have an almost identical PAP to mine.  I've actually done quite a bit of drilling work and discovered all the layouts that do and do not work for me.

I'd say you shouldn't drill a pin to pap distance of anything further than 4.5 inches.  I drilled a low flaring ball 60 x 6 x 60 and I rolled over the fingers and the thumb every time.  I was looking for length and control and that's exactly what I got however I kept hitting the fingers.

Additionally, I wouldn't do anything less than 3.5 inches from the PAP.  Anything less than that tends to roll out and not retain any energy.  I've found my best layouts to be 4 inches.  I don't own any equipment with a pin drilled under the fingers either.  The reason is that for my high track and rev rate I don't have enough axis tilt to put the core on a pin under drill in a high flare position.

For example, my long oil or heavy oil drill would be something like a 40 x 4 x 40.  This results in the pin about 2 inches above the fingers and 1 inch to the right.  Sounds like stacked leverage but with a higher pin.  I find this drill to read the midlane and have a strong continuous backend move.  When I drill pin under fingers I struggle to get it to read the midlane.

Just some thoughts! send me a PM if you want to know more about the layouts I've done.

I have them same pap as op.  I stay around the 4 1/2 to 6" pin to pap, I personally don't throw balls stronger than 4 1/2" and also don't go lower than 1" below the fingers for fear of hitting the holes.  One of my favorite layouts puts the pin below my middle finger at about 6" to pap with no weight hole and I love it on the short stuff.

This has nothing to do with the pin to PAP measurement and everything with MB placement compared to your finger holes. I have a Cell that gets over the thumb a lot. When you move your MB around it moves the location of the "bow tie" of your flare. I have found that when I have a mass bias more than an inch above my thumb whether right over or kicked out it gets close to the thumb hole.

i am around same pap as well. i use anywhere from 4" - 5 1/2", but usually always keep my pins up. figure you can still get a ball to read sooner, just by adjusting coverstock and such. great posts guy. stuff like this is what keeps me coming back. always good information to learn from!

I'm a high tracker with medium rev's. I can place the pin just about anywhere above the finger's CG location nomattah! I drilled up an asymetrical and put the pin in the ring finger as a test layout. This has been my strongest ball yet and I do not clip the finger's at all. I can possibly put the pin another inch lower but I do run the risk of rolling over the middle finger hole.

My PAP is in my profile, it might be a little off as I have not checked it in a while. My T-Road Pearl is drilled Pin up, roughly 3 1/4x4. My Natural is drilled 4x4. My Gravity Shift is drilled 3 1/2x5 (MB 5" from PAP). My Aweseom Finish is 4 1/2x6 1/4 (MB 6 1/4" from PAP)

A general guide as one size does not fit all but generally the lower the pin the less friendly it becomes for high trackers.
Higher tracks to the left, Lower tracks to the right.

Sorry, you have to click on Hawg infomation to see.

Hi flybub, I have the same pap as you as well, 5 1/2 over and 1/2 inch up and I have 3 balls drilled with pin under, two with pins 4 1/2 from pap and one 5 inches from pap right under ring. The one with the pin 5 from pap makes my track kind of close to my fingers and thumb, but it still works. I also have another ball with the pin 5 1/4 from pap pin under that makes my track close to thumb and fingers but still works. But like a few other posters have said, putting the pin at like 4 - 5 1/2 from pap above the fingers is a better idea. Also, just like what insidedrive said, doing a 4 1/2 or 4 by 4 1/2 gives a very nice mid lane read and nice continuous back end. I have a storm blaze with a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 pin up and it has a really nice reaction, plus the track is like 1/4 inch from my thumb and fingers.

Do = Stack it! If you just bowl 1x a week
Don't = Rico it! If you bowl 1x a week
