span rulers - photo, identify

Okay, posted this earlier, but for some reason it isn't showing up.

Can anybody help me identify these items?

I received them when I bought my drill press.  I know that 1 is a 6" metal span ruler - see that listed on Jayhawk and Innovative.

I don't know what the other 2 are - not sure if they are for measuring spans, laying out, or both.  They don't have any identifying marks, model numbers, manufacturer names, etc.

They appear to both be forms of span gauges where you would lay the tool over the centerline of a bowler and utilize the cut out areas (gold one) or the flanges (silver one) to draw the finger cut lines based on the measurement that you can see through the center cut-out.  Interesting looking to say the least...but I would stick with the standard ruler they provided.

Funny thing about the silver and bronze "tools" - I measured them against the 6" metal ruler and both of them are off!  The silver is off by about 1/16" and the bronze one is off by 1/8."  The metal ruler matches up perfect with a regular ruler, so I guess it is the most accurate.

The top of the silver one also looks like it is broken, so I'm sure there was supposed to be something else at the top.

I'll be ordering a Jonell span ruler soon, but the metal one will get me started.

qstick777 -- When you compared the measurements on the tools vs the metal span ruler, did you bend the metal ruler to the same curvature as the tools (and the ball)?  If not, there's your difference.  The metal ruler naturally flexes to the curvature of the ball when it's used.  --  JohnP

Yes, actually laid it on top of the tools and pressed it down.  Found one of them started to get off around the 3 to 3 1/2 inch area.  The other was good til around 4".  Sorry, don't remember which one was which.

How about on the underside of the them (the side that would touch the ball)...  becasue their thickness may account for the difference in measurements?  Just a thought...  I have never seen either one of them, but would also guess they are span guages of some sort.

Most of the pictures posted are from equipment from when K Mart sold their ball drilling equipment.

that actually bolts to the table, the ball sits in there and gets clamped down.
You can put letters/number in there and stamp them onto the ball.

The letters/numbers are the rusty things you see sitting between the holder and the drill bits.  I didn't get a hammer or anything, and I haven't tried it out yet - still not 100% how it works.

That's a good point. No, I didn't try to measure on the bottom, but that makes sense.
