Roto Grip Mystic - Negative Pattern

Hi - I have ordered a couple of Roto Grip Mystics.  They will be punched next Monday.  I plan on having one of the pieces drilled with mid-lane read.   The second will have a negative pattern.  I am right handed and carry a multi-house average around 205 and use a multi ball inventory.  Any thoughts on negative patterns?

What is a negative pattern? Are you planning on using the negative axis?

Dakota,

Many people call it a negative pattern when the pin is left of your span line for a right handed bowler.  This has FINALLY went away.  There is no such thing as a positive or negative pattern drilled bowling ball.

It all matters how far the pin is from your postive axis point.  This is also why you should not use the grip as a reference for drilling the bowling ball.  Pin over the ring finger will not be the same for all people.

My PAP is 4 1/2 over and 3/4 up.  Your PAP could be 5 1/2 over and 1/2 up.  That being said, I like the pin 5 inches from my PAP, it gets me good length for my moderate balls speed.  If I put it over the fingers, it will be over my middle finger.  5 inches from YOUR PAP will have the pin over your ring finger.

It's not really anything new, just some people haven't seen it often and they think it's new or wrong or creepy.

Sooo, you should find your PAP and then design your layout for what you want the ball to do on a given pattern.

Hi Guys -

Thanks for the responses.  I will have to talk with my pro shop guy before he punches the ball. Many years ago, I had a Blue Hammer drilled with the pin left and above the fingers.  The ball was long but was some what of a disappointment.  So, the idea went away for a long time.  Recently the pros have been on TV with the so called negative pattern.  Guess that got it in my mind again.  So I am going to try this as an experiment.  We will have to see how it turns out.

this just puts the pin farther from your PAP, in turn should make the ball flare less and travel farther down the lane before making it's jump.

this is nothin new at all it started in the 90's.. I had them one the old first rhino pros and rhino pro re's when I was a kid.. sometimes rhe cause the ball to get into a roll earlier so watch out for that too..

I have a Mystic drilled this way. It is an extremely valuable piece! I use it on dryish lanes with very snappy backends. And with that revving  core of the Mystic, this ball gives me good pop, wayyy down lane, when most other ball are dying and leaving corners.

Good luck with your ball! That coverstock is excellent as well, since it gets thru the heads, but smoothes out downlane reactions as well.

Should prove to be and excellent experiment, you'll be glad you did.
