Roto RS-1 layed-out with pics !!!!!!!!
« on: October 08, 2004, 02:55:32 PM »
I got my RS-1 in today and layed it out. I'm hoping to get decent length with a hard move to the pocket(aren't we all). Ball really looks great. Here's a few pics. I've only layed out a few balls to my credit, last one was a V2 sweet and it was perfect. I'm learning... my eyes should be bulging from my head reading about core design, MB placement, coverstocks, AAAAHHHHHH!!! so much to learn.. Enjoy pics....

Yes, I layed the ball out. I'm still learning, but think I've got a pretty good concept of how to lay a ball out. Things like MB placement, and how the core shape/cover will dictate the reaction in correlation with the drill... As far as the drill on that drive. That driller will never receive anymore business from me or alot of people that seen the ball. Everyone was stuned, even more that me over it...I'm trying to get my own press and jig to drill my own equipment. I've got every thing else I need.

After we drill it up, We'll weight it and see where it needs some taken out. I'll probably throw a shot or two to see where the ball flares and go from there.
johnp--> any suggestions?

dave300- when placing the weighthole, if you want to keep reaction the same, drill a shallow hole on the pap. If you want to reduce reaction at the breakpoint/more midlane, drill deaper smaller hole on pap. If you want it to snap more, drill 2 inches past pap (make sure flare won't hit it). If you want the ball to rev up more, drill it in the thumb positive quadrant.

These are general rules for weighthole placement. you will not be able to do the last weight hole placement unless you drill the fingerholes extremely deep or else you will have illegal finger weight. Remember, the deeper you drill it, the more likely you will change the dynamics of the core/change the reaction. The shallower, the less reaction is changed.

where do you get the measuring tools to draw straight lines on a bowling ball like that? what are they called?

They have a tool(not sure on the name of it) that lays on the ball and you really can't go wrong with it. I have a metal ruler that I shaped around the ball, works good, but the one you see at pro shops are the best. I'm looking to get one as well. I'll find one and post link...

dave300 -- You gave the perfect answer to the balance hole location and stanski has already provided the guidelines for selection.  The layout tool you're looking for would be either a quarter scale or an Armadillo.  The 'dillo is great for axis location and laying balls out, but the quarter scale is better for dividing the ball into sections - mainly for weighing.  The following site offers both.  The Pro Sect quarter scale is under drilling tools, the Armadillo is under measurement gauges.  --  JohnP

klep -- No, they don't look alike.  The armadillo is a transparent plastic shell that covers about 1/3 of the ball.  It has a series of curves on it that you match up (best fit) with the first oil ring, then the PAP is located at the axis finder point.  The curves are also marked with their distance from the PAP, so you can use them to locate the PAP on an undrilled ball by specifying the distance from the PAP to the pin and to either the cg or mass bias.  You can draw straight lines on the ball with it and intersecting lines at 90 degrees.  --  JohnP

Added on edit:  I have looked and looked for a picture of an Armadillo on a web site, but haven't found one.  If anyone knows where one is, let me know so I can add the site to my favorites list.
