Router ?

What all am i looking for in a router if i go that route instead of a plug cutter?  Like what specs should i look for?  Is this a good one?

That would do fine. You'll have to mount a specially-built-for-bowling plug cutter shield on the bottom of it, but that's no big deal.

I made do with a $30 eBay router and it works fine for me. For as little as you're going to use it, you don't have to spend a ton of cash on this tool.

I have the Skill model like that one, cheaper, just as good. I will say, look for one with a light, sure is a help to older eyes seeing the cut is nice with the light.

Most low end routers have 1/4" collets.  I use either a 1/2" or 3/4" straight bit, carbide tipped.  --  JohnP

WOW! I guess Porter Cable makes that router for Craftsman. I was going to say avoid Craftsman and go for a Porter Cable. Historically, Craftsmans have been nearly impossible to find parts and accessories for where, Porter Cable is the industry standard and you can find anything for it.

Why do you need 1/2 and 3/4 collets for work on bowling balls??? Just becasue it only has a 1/4 collet does not mean it is low end. It just means it is not for as heavy of work usually. It will suit MOST peoples purposes just fine. Now, I do alot of woodwork and yes, I do require 1/2 collet for some applications.

The 1/2 or 3/4" refers to the size of the cutting edge of the bit.  The shaft size is 1/4", sorry I didn't make that plain.  --  JohnP
