How to weigh a Ball with Kaufman Scales?

Can anybody give me some insite to this?

For an UNdrilled ball:
- How to check the Gross Weight of a UNdrilled ball?
- How to check and see if the CG is marked correctly on an UNdrilled ball?
- How to check what the Top Weight is on an UNdrilled ball?

For a Drilled ball:
- How to check what the Side, Finger, and Top Weight is on a Drilled ball?

Can anybody simplify this for me? Is there any Video's out there that show this?

Ric, the Jayhawk Bowling website has a section I believe that describes how to get gross weight and how to determine top weight.  There is a demonstration on the Lane #1 website on how to determine if the CG is correct, but I have never tried it and I don't know if its just for Lane #1 balls.

Also, the Jayhawk instructions tell you how to check for static weights as well.  Pretty much all you need for a drilled ball is to have your midline and center of grip line still marked out on the ball and a quarter scale and the Kaufman scale and you can determine all the ending weights in about 5 minutes but that Jayhawk website is very good.

The Lane 1 instructions for finding the cg works for any ball.  In the instructions they, of course, use a Lane 1 ball and refer to the position of the logo.  Until you become accustomed to the procedure, just use a layout pencil to draw a facsimile of the Lane 1 logo on the ball.  --  JohnP

The Jayhawk sight has the complete Kaufman instruction book.  It is the most detailed and easiest to understand.

What I do to find the cg is draw a line, using a prosect, thru the marked cg. Position this line so it is parallel to the weight slides on the scale. Rotate the ball, keeping the line parallel to the weight slides, until you find the heaviest spot. Mark the heavy spot and draw a second line at that spot 90 degrees to the first line. Now put the second line parallel to the weight slides, rotate the ball and find the heavy spot. That's the cg.

Isn't this similar to what the Lane#1 site says? Or am I confused and missing something (which I have been known to do )?

Sorry I took so long to answer you Ric. I've never really looked at the way Lane#1 does it, just that it's something to do with the label. I feel the way I find the cg could be done on a ball with no engraving at all. You can draw the first line anywhere on the ball and find the heavy spot along that line. If the cg is marked correctly the second line you draw should pass thru the marked cg.

The Lane 1 procedure can be used without any label markings as long as you know which way to rotate the ball.  They just reference the label to keep folks straight on the rotation direction.  Moon57 -- I don't think your procedure will work.  Locate the cg your way on a ball that has a mismarked cg, then place your proposed cg location at top dead center in the ball cradle.  If the cg is correct, you can rotate the ball in any direction, keeping the cg at top dead center, and the scale will remain balanced.  --  JohnP
